SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) -- A small passenger airplane crashed in San Luis Obispo, California Thursday morning, injuring the pilot and passenger, local media reported.

Hospital officials said one of the men was in serious condition but conscious, while the other remained in critical condition, the Orange County Register reported.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the single engine 1943 Aeronca 0-58B aircraft, which is registered to Jeffrey B. Welles, 66, of Newport Beach, California, took off from Paso Robles, but at around 9:50 a.m. local time, he radioed an emergency to San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport, located around the midway point between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Shortly after, the aircraft pummeled down and crashed into trees on the 1100 block of Stenner Creek Road on Cal Poly property.

As investigations into the incident continue, the National Transportation Safety Board said it would be removing the wreckage and storing it in Pearblossom, California. However, the FAA said the wreckage would not be examined until next week.
