THAI-CAMBODIA BORDER CLASHES

It's a real war : Cambodia PM

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Wednesday that the recent clashes with Thailand in the disputed border areas was "a real war", adding that there would be no more bilateral talks.

"This is the real war, not the military clash," he said while closing the annual conference of the Ministry of Commerce. "

Thailand created this war and (Thai Prime Minister) Abhisit must be responsible for the war and should be brought before international courts of war crimes," Hun Sen said.

Hun Sen accused Thai troops of firing cluster bomb at Cambodian troops. "Our war with Thailand will be taking long time," he said.

The premier also called for international mediation in bilateral negotiations. "There will be no more bilateral talks, and all negotiations will be participated by the third party."

"Now bilateral mechanism is worthless, so it needs international mechanism. Cambodia will use international mechanisms as much as possible such as asking UN to convene urgent meeting, and sending UN peacekeepers or UN observers to Cambodia."

"Thai government should not be afraid of international mechanism," Hun Sen said.

While rejecting bilateral talks and vowing that Cambodia will not compromise on border issue, the premier stressed that " peaceful negotiations will continue, but the negotiations must have the participation of the third party."

Hun Sen said that Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong will report the UN Security Council on this issue.

He also rejected the Thai media's reports that his eldest son was wounded in the latest exchange of fire with Thailand on Monday.

The border between Thailand and Cambodia has never been completely demarcated and the issue of Preah Vihear temple has been a long-standing dispute. Although the International Court of Justice ruled in 1962 that the temple itself belonged to Cambodia, the row over the 4.6 square kilometers territory around the temple has never been resolved.

The latest four-day clashes on Feb. 4-7 between the two countries have already left some soldiers dead or wounded on both sides, and inflicted damage on the Preah Vihear temple which was awarded World Heritage site in 2008. At the same time, tens of thousands of the two countries' villagers nearby the disputed areas fled home for safe shelters.

Seems like the Cambodians want a war, and furthermore they think the international community will side with them. Also seems like the Thais are not interested in war, but don't want to loose face when provoked? More a case of 'cry wolf' for Hun Sen?

Hun Sen accused Thai troops of firing cluster bomb at Cambodian troops.

1) Does any one know if Thailand has cluster bombs?

2) Aren't cluster bombs dropped from planes?

Thailand alledly has a stock pile of these munitions, but again allegedly are obsolete.

They can be dropped from the air or ground launched.

Hun Sen should know what he's talking about: wasn't he a member of the Khymer Rouge? Anyway, it's about time we had another war again perhaps it'll bring down the value of the Thai Baht!!!!!

Please show some reprehensibility with the posts, war is something no one needs. If the situation does blow up don't you think foreign nationals will be advised to leave and as for going out and spending your new valued baht good luck!!

Perhaps you may have intended the request for war as a humorous bit of sarcasm. Sadly, it falls flat and is in very poor taste. Do you really want to have a war which would see a return to kids being blown to bits or coming back with missing limbs? Do you not understand that there would be a significant impact upon the civilian population and the environment in a war zone? Is a 10% devaluation of the baht worth the misery that a war would bring? Do you realize that a war with Cambodia would shutdown of a large part of tourism. What of the tourists and other civilians that would be trapped? Are you going to take care of them?

How about this option? I ask the Thai military to explode some ordinance in close proximity to you, not enough to kill you, but sizeable enough to maim you, perhaps blindness or a loss of a leg or arm, and I give you 1000 baht. The 1000 baht will represent your gain from the currency fluctuations and the ordinance discharge will be a sharing of the joys of war. Is that ok?

Seems a bit strange that this conflict flared up and a few days later the Cobra Gold international training program starts. As of a couple of days ago there are several hundred U.S. Marines, Koren Marines, Japanese Marines as well as military forces from several other countries here in Thailand training with the Thai military.

Thailand want bilateral talks, which is what was suggested by the current head of ASEAN.

The ICJ ignored what the 1904-7 treaty actually contains. The IJC ignored what the leader of the French delegation in that time said clearly many times - that he wanted a topographical feature, not an artificial line as a frontier. (This means the cliff face, not a line behind the temple.) When the fact that Siam was giving away so much land with the drawing of that new frontier is ignored. What the ICJ said was that weak slight Siam (without the skills to do so) should have questioned the might of France in the accuracy of the maps France issued. Even though it has been shown that the maps contain several errors. Even though Siam, Thailand, France and Cambodia have accepted a correction from an error in the map in other part of the border.

Considering all that; we should not be surprised that Thailand, in the person of the PM does not want more international 'mediation'.

Hun Sen posturing for his own country, propaganda purposes and to try and get some international sympathy, but mostly to look strong ion Cambodia. That is what military strongmen and their supposed dynastic successors have to do. Strongmen also play very well in most Asian countries with the people.
