Indonesian quake felt in Phang-nga and Phuket

PHANG-NGA: -- Residents in this southern resort province of Phang-nga left their homes in panic Wednesday morning, as a tremor caused by an earthquake in Indonesia rocked buildings in the province.

Residents in the nearby Phuket Province also felt the tremor.

The moderate earthquake measured 5.0 on the Ritcher scale rocked the North of Indonesia's Sumatra Island at about 6.20am (Thailand time).

There has been no report of damage or casualties from the new quake.

Phang-nga residents returned to their homes after local authorities announced that there would be no tsunami.

Thailand's six southern Andaman provinces, including Phuket, Phang-nga, Krabi, Trang, Ranong and Satun, were battered by last December's tsunami, which was caused by a 9.0 intensity earthquake off the northern Sumatra coastline.

Phang-nga was Thailand's hardest hit area in last year's disaster.

AN UNDERSEA EARTHQUAKE CAUSED SOME VIBRATIONS IN PHANG NGA THIS MORNING

An undersea earthquake occurred between PHUKET (ภูเก็ต) Island and Sumatra Island this morning. Some earthquake effects were felt by the local residents in PHANG NGA (พังงา) Province. The quake was measured at 4.7 on the Richter Scale.

Mr. ANUWAT METHIVIBULSAWAD (อนุวัฒน์ เมธีวิบูลวุฒิ), the PHANG NGA Provincial Governor, disclosed that vibrations of doors, mirrors and home appliances were noticeable in TAKUA PA (ตะกั่วป่า), GAPONG (กะปง) and TAI MUANG (ท้ายเหมือง) Districts this morning. The national disaster warning centre has reaffirmed that an undersea earthquake took place in the southern part of Thailand at around 06.25 hours.

In the meantime, the natural disaster warning watchtower in PHANG NGA is still under construction. The construction of the watchtower should be completed within 60 days.

Prime Minister’s Office Spokesperson SURAPONG SUEBWONGLEE (สุรพงษ์ สืบวงศ์ลี) said that earthquake situations have to be monitored periodically. He said the Cabinet has endorsed the budget plan and the construction of the national disaster warning centre. Thus, the public will be informed before certain natural disaster events may take place.
