Hey everyone. Quite probably this is swimming around in Thaivisa.com somewhere, so I apologize if this is redundant.

I hold a non-imm B visa that was extended for another year in january. however, i left my employer on jan.31, 2011. My questions are as follows:

1) do i need to go to immigration and officially cancel the visa, after which i pay 1,900 baht for a temporary extension?

2) if i need to cancel it, can i just leave the country, which will automatically nullify the visa, and apply for a tourist visa? or will not having canceled it obstruct the process of receiving a tourist visa?

3) or can i just enjoy this visa until i find a new employer?

Work permit questions:

i read somewhere that a work permit that is still valid can be transferred to a new employer for a smaller fee than an outright new one. any ideas whether this is true?

if the above is not the case, do i need to get my work permit from my employer and cancel it myself? in other words, are the horror stories surrounding the work permit if i don't do this true, or are such stories merely myths promulgated by disgruntled ex-employees?

your insights are greatly appreciated.
Your extension got cancelled the day you left your employer.
Right now you are on overstay.
if the employer hasn't canceled my visa, how will immigration know? how do they figure out i am overstaying?

Employer does not cancel visas.

They cancel your WP, labour department notify immigrations.

If you have a one year extension of stay from immigration rather than a 90 day visa entry you were required to visit Immigration with a letter from employer to cancel your extension of stay on January 31st. You are now on overstay if found out and will have to pay the normal 500 baht per day fine. If you do not have a re-entry permit they may see you leaving without and ask about that. If you have a re-entry permit you may have an issue obtaining a new visa. If you did not intend to return just leaving likely would not be a great issue but if you intend to return and work it could be found during routine checks so likely best to visit immigration and take care of the overstay and obtain the 7 days if not ready to immediately leave.

Wow. This is significant. Besides paying the fine, do you know whether there are any long-term repercussions, such as difficulties in process a future tourist or non-imm B visa?

Thanks a lot for your insights.
So far an overstay fine has no repercussions. You can get a visa and re-enter Thailand as usual, without any problems.
