Latest developments and discussion of recent events in the Ukraine War
That's the elephant in the room. Is NATO ( or at least the people that control NATO ) willing to risk MAD to "save" Ukraine? I suspect that they are, but that the politicians are reluctant to go that far. They've kept it to supplying enough weapons to bleed Russia till now, but who knows what goes through the minds of warmongers? IMO the danger increases the likelier Trump is to winning, as if he does, hopefully the fat lady will be singing, and the warmongers will want a fait accompli before he gets to sit in the big chair. They will have 2 months to make it happen. -

Drone Saves 56-Year-Old Man from Flash Flood in Phayao
Picture from responders. August 22, the flood situation in Phayao Province remains critical as heavy rainfall continues, causing flash floods to inundate homes, schools, and agricultural lands across several districts. The powerful floodwaters have swept away structures, including a hut in the middle of a rice field, which was submerged and destroyed by the torrent. In a heart-pounding incident in Pong District, Phayao, a flash flood rapidly engulfed the area, leaving a 56-year-old man stranded in the middle of the floodwaters. The man, a resident of Baan Sae, Moo 6, Khwan Subdistrict, had crossed a stream to collect belongings from under a hut at the edge of the village. However, the sudden surge of floodwater destroyed the hut, sweeping it away, and trapping the man in the middle of a field. Local officials from Khwan Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO) and a team led by Anukul Jamnae and Wichai Kamla responded to the emergency. They ingeniously adapted a large drone, typically used for agricultural purposes, into a rescue drone. The drone was outfitted with a rope and a life jacket, which was flown to the stranded man. After securing the life jacket and tying the rope around himself and to a nearby tree, the man held onto the rope. The team successfully pulled him to safety. Amidst cheers and relief from his family and neighbours , the man was safely brought ashore, thanks to the drone. Hands up anybody who ever saw a non-Rolex wearing Chinese tourist in a restaurant other than at the 2-Star hotel their tour company booked them into. I didn't think so. -

22 August Small Aircraft Crash in Chachoengsao.
UPDATE Picture showing drone image of the crash site overnight. August 23, Chachoengsao Governor Chonlathee Yangtrong, alongside relevant agencies, provided an update on the crash of the aircraft in Chachoengsao province. Nine people were on board the plane, including two Thai pilots, five Chinese tourists, and two Thai flight attendants. The national accident investigation committee, along with more than 300 military personnel, police officers, and rescue volunteers, are involved in the operation. Human remains and aircraft debris have been found approximately 10 meters below ground as rescue workers continue to dig, with the operation is being continuously evaluated. The plane is believed to have nose-dived into the ground in an area that was once a fishpond, now filled with soft mud. With rising water levels, workers are racing against time, using pumps and temporary dams, to remove water from the area and continue their search. Rescue units, forensic teams, and the accident investigation committee are closely coordinating efforts. Ambulances and forensic personnel are on standby to handle the remains, once found. Currently there has been no communication with the victims' families, and further coordination with the Tourist Police and Immigration Police will be required. Authorities expressed their condolences to the families of the victims. Chachoengsao Police Chief Naravit Sukontawit confirmed that several body parts had been recovered, including hands, arms, torsos, and skull fragments. These remains will be sent to the Forensic Institute for identification to determine the victims' identities. The recovery mission is expected to continue around the clock until all the remains are recovered. -- 2024-08-23 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe -

Yeah, I tend to agree. Although I make an exception for a few Scandies who are buff enough to pass the "bad grandad" test and are honouring their Viking heritage. The aging Californian ex-surfer dude - not so much. -
