At least 14 killed in bar attacks in north Mexico

JUAREZ, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- At least 14 people were killed in a series of attacks against bars in the northern region of Mexico, officials said Sunday.

Nine people were killed in the state of Coahuila, and at least 11 others were injured during separate attacks when several gunmen opened fire against two bars Saturday night in the state's capital of Torreon. The first attacked occurred at around 5 p.m. local time in 'El 3-2' bar, while the second attack took place only three hours later at 'Bar Virreyes' at around 8 p.m.

In the violent city of Juarez, Chihuahua, at least five people were killed in a bar attack as well.

Meanwhile, the latest killings in the touristic city of Acapulco, Guerrero, which has suffered from rising criminal activity, included the discovery of four bodies dumped in a trash dispenser. Three of them had their throats slashed. A fifth body was found on the roadside of a nearby highway.

Over 35,000 deaths have been documented since President Felipe Calderon launched his 'war against drug cartels' shortly after being elected in 2006.
