Yes I have used the 3 blades and twin blades and 4 blades and find the Fusion to be the best so far - otherwise no amount of advertising budget would get them the market. But agree it is overpriced just as patent medicine often is. And would love to find a generic that works as well but it sure will not be a Blue Blade or other safety razor of 50 years ago.

Yes, but you haven't rusty--rusty--3 blades and twin blades and 4 blades. I'd say that 4 rusty blades must be worse than 1 rusty blade.

Gillette monopolizes the market w/ absurd Fusions and Mach 3s to maximize profit, of course. Obviously this is a religious issue with you where rationality has little place. You seem awfully worried about current fashion and hate to appear retro. But safety razors were and still are wonderful and absolutely the best way to go, same as vintage Scotch. Thousands have gone back to them; DE shaving has become quite an industry--of which you're blissfully unaware, as you pay thru the nose. You should spend time reading the badgerandblade forums.

Rubbish,

Sometimes something shows up that really does do whats on the packet. Fusion is one. I have tried everything, including other manufacturers multi blade things that don't work.

One fusion will last me over a month and my stubble is a rasp. Downside, the cost, but one blade will last over that month. thumbsup.gif

The economy makes people buy many inferior products to get by but there is absolutely no disputing that the Gillette blades are EXTREMELY superior to those double blades and that they last A LOT longer. Yes, the Gillette blades are way over priced but provide a much better and comfortable shave and there is just no disputing this.

As for speculation, I have to wonder if the price actually pays for itself or comes close considering how long these blade last. I also would speculate that nobody ever experiences rusted blades with a Gillette as I have come across used blades that have sat around for more than a year in the bathroom without any rust while I've seen the double blades ones get rusty in a matter of weeks (disposable) or a months.

The Gillette last so freaking long they put a strip on it that turns white to let you know when you are not getting an optimal shave and it is time to replace ... unlike other razors where you know dam_n well it is time to replace because of what they do to your face. In other words, the Gillette's last so freaking long they had to come up with a way to try to get users to switch blades while the blade is still providing a good shave.

Just an FYI ... always dry your razor after use and it will last lot longer and provide better shave. Not talking about visible rust but actually microscopic that dulls the blade. At least this was something I read or saw on TV once about shaving blades.

I prefer getting a decent shave and saving my blood to power body rather than spilling it to old technology. I also gave up on my Commodore computer when it became outdated.

Over 40 years ago in Singapore I used to shave with a cutthroat razor which was great if/when I could get it sharp enough.

I went over to Gilette years ago and on to Fusion 4 years ago in EnnZed. I brought spares back with me and most blades last me a month.

It seems as though I may have to buy a new razor probably a Gilette Mach 3 as a New Year present to myself as I will have run out at long last.

We have suffered the nicks and cuts of such and decided to adopt to newer and better technology. Not everything was better in our youth.

Hard to believe a razor could be better than the Mach 3! I hope to try the Fusion some day then. I rank Viagra and and the Mach 3 as the pinnacle products of free market science and engineering.

Fusion is the No.1. I have used them for years. When l had run out l bought the best l could find, they were crap. I can guarantee that when you use them you will be smiling. BUT, their sad.png high cost is questionable as a rip off.

Double edge safety razors are by far the cheapest and closest shave.

But you need a bit of skill to use them without cutting yourself, which limits their potential user-base.

I grew up the cartridge style blades and other than seeing the old double edge handle in my dad's shave kit as a kid never had any experience with anything else. I tried all the technology out there from the many styles of electric shavers to the multi blade (5 + edger) cartridges that are being touted today. I have been wanting to try a DE blade for a few years now but just never made the effort to get started. I too thought there would be a learning curve where I managed to bloody up my face while learning the finer points of shaving with old tools. BOY was I wrong!

DE shaving is great! What I found was that with the correct tools the experience was much better than any I'd ever had with high tech cartridge blades. Just one shave was enough for me to be hooked on shaving. Something I had never enjoyed has now become an activity I look forward to. I get an amazingly close shave without any irritation to my face. I'm not the only one thrilled, the wife is also loving it as now I am shaving almost daily.

The blades are dirt cheap as is the shaving soap. One problem might be finding them locally in Thailand but they are available to some degree locally and the rest can be purchased for peanuts online to be delivered to your home in Thailand. The other problem is I find myself rubbing my face all the time as it just feels so dam_n smooth.

I followed the suggestion of another TVF poster that listed some good starter tools. I can definitely see that the wrong handle can turn this into a horrible experience. The handle I got seems solid and precision vs the one my mate picked up at friendship that seemed like a piece of garbage. You don't have to spend a lot for a decent handle but you'll probably have to order one as I have yet to see any decent ones sold here in Thailand.

Here is the handle I bought and it works a treat....http://www.ebay.com/itm/250896024751

I also took the recommendation of another TVF poster and picked up this brush and soap http://www.ebay.com/itm/221014001549

So say what you will, fact is that I was brainwashed by the marketers to think that these new high tech $3 cartridges will get me a better shave than a 20 cent DE blade. Of course it's on their best interest to keep men thinking that. It's all hype and BS. Try for yourself and I guarantee you will see the light.

the whole excuse that DE is old tech like a commodore PC is just lame and wrong. The fact is that there was nothing to improve other than the sales profits on new cartridge blades. Most of us fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

If i could also add that multi-blade razors clog easily, then you can't shave with them.

Double-edge razors can't clog, and therefore the blades last a lot longer.

Think clogging is caused by shaving ''soap''. Never used it, l use the same soap l wash with with noooooooooo probs at all with Fusion blades. thumbsup.gif

If you are interested in switching to DE shaving or just want to find ways to make it even better, I highly recommend Leisureguy’s Guide to Gourmet Shaving. YES YES!!

That is a very good point indeed. I use "shave secret", a shaving oil, as a pre shave. The oil works great to protect your skin and keep moisture while shaving. the biggest drawback is that it causes your multi blade razors to clog something fierce. I have to keep an old toothbrush around to repeatedly clean the multi razor carts during each and every use. After just one swipe across my face the multi blade carts are clogged. That problem will never exist with a DE blade and I love it.

The easiest remedie for that is using shaving foam.I use Mach 3 and previously used shaving oil, which would give me this issue, after changing to foam I never noticed clogging again.

Another solution is using the high pressure bum spray to clean your razor whistling.gif

Yes I am well aware that the oil is what is creating the issue on the multi blade carts. I love the oil and will not stop using it because it clogs the blades. As mentioned I have been using a toothbrush to clean my razor as I shave which is quite a PITA. Using the high pressure water squirter would make things no less a pain and would require me to shave sitting on the toilet since the hose doesn't reach my sink.

For me, not only the easiest but also the best solution was to toss my multi blade carts in the trash and stick with a DE razor. Cheaper, much more enjoyable, and better results are just a few reasons why I will now stick with DE and never look back to multi blade carts again. It takes me no more time to shave with a DE than a multi blade cart but the results are night and day different.

Until you try it, you really have no basis to say that multi blade carts are the way to go. Until I tried it, I thought the 5 blade titanium were god's gift to men. Actually I see now that it's all about Schick making more profits.

Oh, there's LOTS of disputing this, unless you're talking about Gillette DE blades. smile.png Where you been?

DE blades don't rust w/ some obscure exceptions you've never heard of and will never encounter. They're all stainless nowadays. Besides, you use them 4 - 7 days and toss 'em. Meanwhile, you're gettin' great enjoyable shaves for ~11 baht/month for blades.

Hard to believe a razor could be better than the Mach 3! I hope to try the Fusion some day then. I rank Viagra and and the Mach 3 as the pinnacle products of free market science and engineering.

That plastic vastly overpriced cartoon?

Men are paying over the odds for a clean shave because of a huge mark-up on razor heads.

The products sold by Gillette and other companies cost as little as 5p to make, industry insiders have revealed.

But consumers are charged up to £2.43 a piece - a mark-up of more than 4,750 per cent.

Maybe you could do some research on the profits of Nike, Adidas, Coca Cola , Pepsi and a few hundred other multi nationals and come to the constatation that they all have a similar business model.

But, what if you don't care so much about the money and you are not so much a macho man?

In that case your girlfriend or wife will have to make the decision for you. Ask her whether she wants you to use a straight, hard tool instead of that curved plastic you've been using, vibrating or not, one that'll never wear out with use--and consequently turn the savings over to her or take her out another time per month (I ain't sayin' where, mind you!).

Maybe you could. I got to do everything for you?

I don't hear anybody complaining he's been ripped off by the price of a Coke.

The difference is that these other companies have fierce competition whereas Gillette has a defacto monopoly. Their profits can't possibly approach 4,750 percent on any of their products.

Retailers put this plastic on their shelves exclusively because the markup is so huge. Consumers can't even see, let alone buy, a traditional DE razor or blades because retailer's profit will be so small. If they think they have no access to anything else, then they've got to buy Fusions etc.

Well do you care about a good shave that leaves you feeling good? That is why I made the switch and certainly have no regrets.
