"Visa-Running" A Car? - Possible Or Not Worth The Hassle?

Featured Replies

Inspired from some threads in the Bike Forum, I am wondering, if I could do the same with my car?

I know I can not import my car (german MB SL 320 Brabus R129 1995, now garaged since 8 years), because of the incredible high taxes.

But if I ship the car to Port Klang and then driving it into Thailand, can I get a "temporary import paper", valid for 6 months?

If yes, I have to "Visa-Run" the car every 6 months? Doesn't matter which country or border?

I live only 2.5 hours near Cambodia, so it could be a nice trip every six months.. (could renew my 90 day visa on the same trip).

Some may suggest to sell the car in Germany, BUT...I love this car since I bought it 1997, and condition is almost like new.

It is possible

Some get 90 days some get 180 days, never seen more.

You need to make a financial guarantee for the cars value, which shouldnt be more than a few million baht. Money lost if car isnt brought out again

Only a few million Bt?

Amount of Deposit depends on what?

Is it a general procedure, for each foreign visitor? Everybody has to pay a guarantee?

Or maybe only for "not Asian" cars?

Put some racing stickers and numbers on it tell them you're going to compete in it.. I'm only half joking and actually quite serious...Any cars coming in on a temporary visa need to have a bond posted and it stays there as long as you have the car here so you need to be able to leave it without need obviously..

1995 SL 320 Brabus will be valued at a couple of mill by customs. The rules are for all cars, but I know Laos and Malaysia usually gets away without it

Warpspeeds dressing trick could work to establish a lower value. removing Brabus could too :)

Recycled books qualifies for 5 years in jail. 10 years if organised, thats more than one person involved.

Yeah same on you guys advocating illegal activities, you should read the rules better <_< ..

Ok, forget the "recycled book" thing.

But shipping the car to Singapore, reg it and then driving it into TH is not illegal.

Can somebody provide me with some details about registration in Singapore?

How many days can the car stay (legally) in Th?

thanks in advance
