Hi,

In my current Passport I have a 12m non-o multi entry Visa (from Hull UK, vist family/friends) with 90 day border runs for almost 1 year, then I started working and changed to a non-b single entry (from Penang) which was then extended by immigration into 2012 based on employment. Current WP is valid until May this year. I have now left my employment and my employer will keep my WP active until it expires, they say I will have to get a new Visa then or before if I get new job.

My extn stamp says nothing about the reason I was granted extension, just says 'extension of stay permitted up to...' 'notification of residence must be made every 90 days'. So can I stay until the date in passport and ignore the fact my WP will expire or do I really have to get a new Visa when it expires. I thought WP and extn of stay where linked but the dates don't match.

If new Visa (tourist I guess) where will be best locally considering I have the o & b and then the extension of stay, no tourist visas before. I am not married, have no kids nor am I over 50. Any help appreciated - thanks.

You have to leave the country the day your employment ends, as you are on an extension of say based on employment and will be invalid anyway when you don't have a work permit anymore.

You could try to get a double entry tourist visa in Vientiane and try to find a new job.

If your employer keeps the WP active, you will also have to pay income tax. It just means your employment hasn't ended. Your extn of stay will end the moment your employment ends.

If you have a nrw job lined up by then and have the documents ready, you do NOT have to leave the country and apply for a new visa.

On a sude note: If you are here based on a non-O for marriage, you do NOT have to leave the country ro get a non-B. You can apply for a work permit with your non-O.

How would you owe income tax if you are not employed and have no income? The work permit does not mean you are employed under current policy AFAIK and some offices do not even bother with cancellation these days it seems. The key is actual employment as that is when he must cancel extension of stay if based on employment.

Thanks for replies.

It was as I thought regarding the expiry of my current Visa/Extension.

So getting a new Tourist Visa should be no problem despite the previous o,b & extension of stay? - Thanks.

Believe there have been recent reports that Vientiane does not want to provide a tourist visa after a non immigrant entry. As all you should need is single entry I would use some other Consulate at this time.
