Govt under Fire for Trying to End Protests

The People's Alliance for Democracy slams the government for using taxpayers' money to try to put an end to its rally.

People's Alliance for Democracy, or PAD, core leader Major General Chamlong Srimuang said it is a waste of taxpayers' money in the government's attempt to put an end to the PAD rally when the money can be spent on developmental projects.

He said he has clarified with police that the PAD cannot return Phitsanulok Road space to traffic as doing so will endanger protesters.

He added the PAD is not worried about the government's efforts to end its rally as it has no other alternative, but to continue gathering to protect the country's sovereignty.

On the listing of the Preah Vihear Temple as a World Heritage site, Chamlong noted the process is not complete as the management plan has not been submitted.

Furthermore, if Thailand stands firm on its ownership of the 4.6-square kilometer disputed territory, the listing will not be able to go ahead.

PAD spokesman Parnthep Puapongpan said once the listing of the Preah Vihear Temple moves ahead, Thailand will not be able to push out Cambodian troops from the area and may also lose the disputed territory around the temple to Cambodia.

Parnthep said the PAD has also found fault with the enforcement of the Internal Security Act as it did not receive approval from the Cabinet and was not announced in the Royal Gazette, which may make it illegal.

He added this is a discriminating action against the PAD because the act is meant only for it and no other protesting groups.

The spokesman also commented on the 94 million-baht budget used by the government and the 91 million-baht budget used by police to take care of security for the gathering, saying there should be scrutiny on the expense.

PAD coordinator Prapan Khoonmee said Thailand is falling under interference from other countries on the conflict with Cambodia and he did not believe bilateral negotiations will go ahead.

Prapan also said if it is true that the listing of the Preah Vihear Temple as a World Heritage site is complete, it means Thailand has lost territory to Cambodia already and the Thai government should, therefore, withdraw from the World Heritage Committee.

K. Chamlong is right. May I suggest the government tries to recoup the money spent from the PAD protesters who had been ordered to move? Or would that set a very dangerous precedent?

That precedent should have already been settled by TG (Thai) when dealing with the PAD! Sadly, Thailand doesn't operate on legal precedence.

Perhaps someone can give "economics for dummies" book as a gift to all PAD leaders.

Government can only spend tax money and no other money since government is not a business but an entity receiving income from tax collections.

Maybe he was expecting the government to have a whip round during their next meeting.

" 200 baht Suthep you tight bugger! What do you mean you're a bit short till payday because they cut your UBC and you've had to pay 2 months worth this time."

Sorry, but the basic premise here is not correct. Thailand has other sources of income other than taxation/user fees etc.

Does that mean the PTP cannot refer to k. Chamlong's statement in the censure debate? I mean the government must have spent billions on clearing protests in 2009 / 2010. Should have been used on development projects ;)

Send PAD, TPN, UDD, DAAD et al

bills for their removals from state property and public ways.

And if they don't pay, put a lein on the ring leaders assets

and block bank access till the bills are paid, in full with

interest for the delays incurred.

I agree --- (I think the PAD paid directly for the clean-up of Government house though.)

I would prefer for tax budget, to which I contribute, not to be needed for funding the clearing of these protests, it would indeed be nice to see it being available for use on development program's..... But on the flip-side, I view it as a necessity to help reduce the unnecessary inconvenience to the general public that these imbeciles cause.

Ironic, indeed.

So if they all went home it would endanger protesters.

Emmm...... wonder how that works.

He really are competing with Jatuporn to see who can make the most idiotic statement.

Why don't they just go to the source of the problem? I'm sure they would get much better results if they went and protested near the Cambodian Parliament. It would get lots of World attention and surely someone there would realize these guys are right and simply give them what they want.

It could happen, why are you laughing?

PAD Slams Thai Govt For Using Taxpayers' Money To End Protests

The PAD is right. The government should not waste taxpayers money on restoring at least part of the road to the use for which it was built, ie vehicular traffic. They should confiscate assets of the protesters to pay for this expense.

... and jail sentences for leaders for inciting the waste of taxpayers money in the first place - good post Animatic.

Such a cliche for Thai minds to think only on the short term. They have no idea how much this is costing the entire economy and how they are a bad example to our furture generation. If he's so worried about the people's tax money then why not just go home. Let the people go back to work and contribute to the economy, let consumer spending start back up. All of this cocka-mania is for his own interest in discrediting the government that he once strongly supported for.

And of course, by protesting he is actually protecting sovereignty and maybe Cambodians will just step back cause PAD protest just somehow relates to the protect of our sovereign welfare. I wonder how much money he is getting to be an idiot?

removal from public ways???

hey why not go the whole way and just ban any public protest then the dems can sit in their ill gained ivory tower for ever, Thailand can become a one party dictatorship where all non consenting political voices are silenced (This is tongue in cheek, we already seem to have a one party dictatorship and woe betide any other party that wins power as they will soon be removed by the army and the dems placed back in power).

You obviously didn't notice the even handed nature of the comment.

Just because there is a right to protest,

doesn't ALSO mean there is a right to inconvenience all others to do it.

Just to help you with some basic inaccuracies .......

The army removed an extra-constitutional caretaker government. There were elections after that placed three different PM's in power.
