HANGU, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least nine people were killed on Thursday and dozens more were injured when a suicide car bombing hit a police van in northwestern Pakistan, local media reported.

The suicide bombing happened in the town of Hangu in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, where suicide bombings frequently happen. Geo News said the attack happened when a police patrol approached a vehicle for a security check.

"Nine people including four policemen were killed and 32 [were] wounded in the attack, which targeted the police." a police official was cited as saying by Geo News. The conditions of those injured were not immediately known.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari strongly condemned the attack and expressed his condolences with the families of those who lost their lives. He also asked police to take more measures to protect people from terrorism, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) reported.

On Wednesday, unidentified gunmen shot dead Pakistani Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti in the country's capital of Islamabad.
