Young Mexican police chief may seek US asylum

2011-03-06 04:55:31 GMT+7 (ICT)

CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- The 20-year-old single mother who made international headlines last year when she became the police chief in a violent border town near Ciudad Juárez has apparently fled Mexico after receiving dead threats, El Universal newspaper reported.

Marisol Valles García, head of public security of the municipality of Práxedis G. Guerrero in the northern state of Chihuahua, hasn't been at work for the past four days, reinforcing the version that she's seeking political asylum in the United States. Jorge González, attorney to the zone, and Gustavo de la Rosa Hickerson, inspector of the state's Human Rights Commission, said Valles left because she was threatened. De la Rosa said he was informed of this situation by a person who accompanied Valles to the border.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Práxedis, José Luis Guerrero, argued that she is on leave and traveled to the U.S. so that her child could receive medical attention. Authorities claim she will return to her job on Monday.

U.S. Immigration refused to confirm whether Marisol asked for asylum, according to the newspaper.

The criminology student was acclaimed as "Mexico's bravest woman" after taking the job four months ago. She was the only person willing to take the position after her predecessor was kidnapped and beheaded. Juárez is considered Mexico's most violent city, as it registered 3,100 assassinations in 2010, which is an average of 9 each day.
