I visited Doi pui, a trideman village in doi suthep in DEC 2010. Wow, they had electric sewing machinie. Many of them playing mp3 on their handphone. This is not a poor rural part of trideman in chiangmai anymore. They are commercial. And I think this will be the last time I will be there. Good luck for Tourist. YOU WILL BE DISSPOINTED.

Most of the dead are Muslim, which asiawatcher seems to have failed to notice. So, lets not make this into some kind of misplaced anti-Muslim rant.

Care to give us the source of your information on the number of Muslim's dead as compared to other religions.

Also what are you talking about I see no post by asiawatcher.

Anti Muslim rant is your opinion and you have a rite to it. But the rest of us also have a rite to a different opinion. He-l most of this thread is claiming it is all drug related. Is that the angle you are looking for. I see you have said nothing about it.

Now there is a opinion based on wishful thinking. That is my opinion of it. I strongly suspect it is Muslim sponsored.:(

Hmmmm . . . electric sewing machines and MP3 players, eh? Boom time in the boonies.

I must be living next door to Khun Sa then, he's just built a new house and has a 5 year old D-Max. I've heard he's a sandwich smuggler. Kilos and kilos of sandwiches.

They earned that money to buy armed. there are lots of corrupted official in the border. lets say, media had say police arrested smugglers with 3 kgs of yaba. DO you know how many tons of yaba pass through the corrupted police border???? this is their play by corrupted official, to show to the public they had done the job, but indeed......for SHOW.

I love the way you guys think westerners are all so rich. They're not. They're poor. Before they were poor but with credit. Now they have no credit.

Few Westerners I know, including those in the West, could afford a Toyota Vigo.

In this Issan village however I know Thai's that have a few hundred thousand dollars worth of cars, paid for in cash. All off a few rubber trees, a couple of shops, fertilizer shop and motorbike shop. I still tell them to stop wasting their money on cars they rarely use.

Your country is becoming wealthier and that wealth is spreading to those classed as poor. Accept it.

I am not saying that westerners are rich. But in the motor forum, many westerners are saying that they buy top end model of car, fully paid up. So I presume they can make it. But in fact, cars or trucks cost less that in the west than thai. it really hurt them when buying a vehicle.

well I could be wrong but the Muslims in the south are doing what they are best at terrorism.

My question is why in Thailand is it sparked by drugs and not Islam as in all other countries.

Sounds to me like a bunch of Muslim's posting here trying to take the attention of the reality of the south.

Islam is the problem. Drugs are another problem.:jap:

Islam is not a problem. Haters are a problem.

SOUTH CRISIS

Masked attackers spray crowd with machine guns

By The Nation

A 64-year-old man was killed and four others badly wounded when masked insurgents sprayed bullets at them in Pattani province on Sunday, a day after a monk was killed and two others injured in a drive by attack.

Sunday's attack took place at about 7am on YarangYabi Road in Yarang district, which was crowded with people having breakfast in shops, jogging and exercising.

Initial police inquiries found that six insurgents on motorcycles came to the scene and parked their bikes nearby.

Three of them, armed with M16 and AK47 rifles, walked towards the crowd and opened fire on them. The attackers then sped away from the scene.

Police and soldiers were prevented from reaching the scene by roadspike traps and fake bombs. They found 52 cartridges from AK47s and 30 cartridges from M16 rifles at the scene.

The wounded people were rushed to Yarang hospital. One of them, identified as Pol Sgt Sanan Sangkasunya of Yarang district, was shot in the lung and pronounced dead at the hospital.

Four others, including 18-year-old Muhammad Isris Pathan, were seriously injured and transferred to Pattani Hospital.

Yula Pathan, father of Muhammad, said that the insurgents, who wore masks, should not have attacked unarmed people.

The attack came just one day after a drive-by shooting in Khok Pho district in Pattani that killed a monk and seriously wounded another monk and a novice.

The shooting occurred at 7am on Khok PhoTha Rua Road as the monks and novice went to collect alms, as usual, on the route without soldiers providing security. Two unidentified gunmen on a motorbike shot at them and fled the scene.

Phra Apichai Rojrangsan, 28, who was shot in the back with a 9mm pistol, was pronounced dead at Khok Pho district hospital, while fellow monk Phra Suchart Inthankaew, 36, and novice Sakol Semsan, 16, all from Pura Pradit Temple, were shot and severely injured.

Could this be the answer, heading south one way tickets only.

But seriously:

Seems to me that there has become a culture of killings in the south.

If you have a problem with someone just shoot them or pay someone to do it for you.

Much easier than trying to work out differences whether they be personal, business or religious.

Not an easy thing to fix, difficult to identify those doing the shooting without completely flooding the place with police and army.

Give then their own state?

Do you really think that would stop the killings or would it make it worse.

The Thai administration, army and police pull out and leave them to it, then the power struggle and the killing would really start.

Refugees going to both the north and south while those who want power fight it out with their private armys.

I would say flood the area--yes flood it with the vast army that is doing nothing--and the 2000 hi so generals--send them down, they receive massive wages to tend to their own businesses. if you have any chance you have to FLOOD the area--if not you have an ongoing situ. Police in villages--in towns,, big army back-up, manning roads and check points all over. police to have checkpoints to get the shooters-on M/cycles and not those without crash hats. Snuff it out involving everyone, the rats that are taking refuge will have to dissappear....night and day-not letting up, it is bound to make a difference. When there is freedom of movement the rats come out.

Islam is the problem. Drugs are another problem.:jap:

Despite his somewhat erratic posting regularity, babykyo is quite right that the drugs trade - specifically crystal meth - has an influence on the Southern insurgency problems. But it's not all about drugs (and the money that comes from it); the various pro-violence Islamist factions align themselves with drug people, unknowingly to many in their organisations, as it provides financial benefits and logistical support. The currently-very-high Malay demand for crystal meth, and the hard legal punishments for producing it in Malaysia, means that this was always a marriage likely to happen. Many of the violent insurgents are Malay or Thais living in Malaysia.

As for whether or not this is a civil war, I answered the same question by the same poster not 3 weeks ago - no it's not a civil war, it's an insurgency.

And as for whether Thaksin improved things in the South, I do hope for the sake of your own credibility and dignity that that comment was made in jest.

you got in 23 posts in this thread in a couple of hours...

well done. :wai:

You forgot to mention he also managed to say nothing. My personal opinion was all of his posts were designed to take the spot light off of Islam.

No my post was not in jest. It said nothing about Thaksin who I think is Thailand's public enemy number one.
Why is it a problem only in the south the drugs are coming from the North they go through many provinces where it is not a every day acceprted fact to just kill people for lack of any thing else to do. Only in the south. I think not. Take Islam out of the picture and you would have no more drive by shootings or indiscrimanate road side bombs. Teachers would not need to be protected the list go's on. I am not saying they have no problems with drugs down there I am saying they have another problem Islamic teachings. Don't think for a moment that a teacher would need protection if all they were teaching was the Koran.
Perhaps your post was in jest. Edited by jayjay0

I think he may be on amphetamines.

That was my thought too.

Loosely constructed thoughts in rapid succession, like a machine-gun of one-liners -- seen it far too much up close to enjoy it anymore.

Have you been to Narathiwat? The situation you describe is the situation that already exists - you can't drive 15 minutes without encountering an army bunker barbed wire slalom roadblock manned with 3-15 fully-armed soldiers with frowns on their faces and fingers on triggers.

The thing is that most of the insurgents don't ride around with weapons unless they're on their way to take out a rubber farmer or whatever... they come from all sides out of the undergrowth, and a lot of them are back in Malaysia within an hour.
