PM ensures Oil Fund will remain at 30 billion THB

BANGKOK (NNT) -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva clarified that State Oil Fund currently remained at 30 billion THB but authorities had been confused over the calculation of the future amount of the Fund.

According to the Prime Minister, the initial speculation that 7 billion baht was theoretically inadequate to stabilize the rapid growth of diesel prices. However, an updated figure of 30 billion baht, reinstates the potential of the funds. LPG, and cooking gases are among the supported commodities in the industrial sector, and will be sustained until mid-June. Later on Monday, involved parties including the Ministry of Finance will discuss the Oil Fund rules in order to prevent any further

effects toward other sectors.

Police capt held for shooting at gold shop

By The Nation

Forty-year-old Police Captain Chaitat Jaemmuang, deputy investigator of the Chana Songkram Police Station in Bangkok, was arrested and detained after robbing the Maethongsuk goldsmith shop on Rajvithee Road.

Chaitat was accused of shooting and injuring a fellow police officer who guarded the gold shop with two gun-shot wounds on Friday. He confessed to having done it in an attempt to repay over a million baht gambling debt.

Chaitat's girlfriend and some colleagues visited him in jail and tried to urge police to take a land title deed as part of the bail request. His 30-year-old girlfriend, who asked not to be named, said she was not aware of his financial situation. But the Criminal Court in Ratchada Road refused bail, however, for fear he would flee and intimidate witnesses if he was released. Chaitat faces charges of intentional manslaughter, possessing a .38 revolver gun illegally and attempted robbery. He has also been summarily removed from service.

Plans for China-based AIT Centre

By The nation

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) inaugurated a new office in Shanghai, the first of its kind in China late last month.

AIT president Prof Said Irandoust said the AIT China office in Shanghai could be the first step in the opening of an AIT Centre in China. Irandoust said that 700 Chinese students have graduated from AIT since 1984.

"It is our belief that successful operations in China require local presence and competence, and the AIT China office will channel AIT's strengths to serve China's national goals of human capital development and sustainable green economic growth," he added.

Jonathan Shaw, director of AIT Extension, said the 20-year-long partnership between AIT and the Chinese Ministry of Education has been central to the cooperation between AIT and China in general. The AIT China Office was established by AIT in collaboration with YueHan (Shanghai) Trading. The AIT China office will increase the visibility of AIT in China and will help in student recruitment, joint ventures and offering short courses.

In another agreement signed to coincide with the opening of the AIT China office, the China scholarship council announced it would offer 40 scholarships to Chinese students to pursue master's and doctoral studies at AIT. The scholarship will include the tuition fee, registration fee and research fee, a living stipend, visa fee and return airfare. The CSC scholarship programme will run for four years.

Public Asked Not to Panic over Palm Oil Shortage

The country's leading hypermarket chain, Tesco Lotus, will distribute 200,000 liters of palm oil to its branches nationwide this weekend. Meanwhile, the Commerce Ministry asks the public not to hoard palm oil, assuring that there is sufficient supply for domestic consumption.

Commerce Ministry Permanent Secretary Yanyong Puangrat asked the public to stop being concerned about a possible further shortage of palm oil, saying that responsible agencies are continuously distributing palm oil to the markets and that will effectively solve the crisis.

Yanyong further said 90,000 more tons of palm oil will be imported if the 45,000 tons imported earlier are not enough. He added at the end of this month, palm oil output from local farms will enter the market and that will put an end to the overpricing and shortage of palm oil.

He admitted that bottled soybean oil has been in short supply since the shortage of palm oil has forced people to buy soybean oil instead. As for soybean oil producers' request for a price hike of 19 baht a liter from 46 baht to a whopping 65 baht, Yanyong said the request will be carefully reviewed before a decision is made.

The permanent secretary also remarked on the growing concern about possible shortage of sugar, saying the Industry Ministry has determined to even raise the supply to meet the demand through increasing production.

He added Commerce Minister Porntiva Nakasai has ordered inspection after receiving a petition about the shortage and price hike of sugar.

Meanwhile, Darm Sukhonthasub, senior deputy managing director of Ek-chai เอกชัย Distribution System Company, which operates Tesco Lotus, conceded that the amount of palm oil being sold at Tesco Lotus stores is not enough to serve public demand.

He noted the company is waiting for 200,000 liters of state-sponsored pink-cap cooking palm oil from refineries which are expected to reach the company's distribution center tomorrow. The amount will be distributed to its branches nationwide the next day.

Darm also admitted that the supply of soybean oil has dropped for two months but it was not in short supply.

Furthermore, he said the company is holding the MBK Super Sale 2011 event from now through the end of this year with more than 1,000 booths offering goods at discounted prices of up to 80 percent.

PAD to Call for Impeachment of PM

The People’s Alliance for Democracy has prepared to file a malfeasance suit against the prime minister with the National Anti-Corruption Commission, as well as launch a signature gathering campaign calling for his impeachment.

People’s Alliance for Democracy, or PAD, core leader Major General Chamlong Srimuang said protesters will not try to obstruct police officers if they decide to disperse the rally. However, the group will keep coming back to the area to hold their protest as they have no other choice, but to pressure the government with protests.

Chamlong noted that the protest has gone on for 42 days to date, and that it is not surprising that the government wants to disperse the rally as the speeches on stage have centered on revealing the government’s poor performance on various issues.

Chamlong noted that the government is in a difficult position as civil servants and soldiers are joining the rally out of disagreement with the government. He reiterated that the protest is not for one particular person's benefit, but that it is the benefit of the country.

PAD Coordinator Praphan Khoonmee said Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has caused Thailand to lose territory by allowing Asean to intervene in the conflict with Cambodia and for letting Cambodian troops occupy the 4.6 square kilometers of disputed land. He said if Indonesian soldiers station themselves in the disputed areas, it will show the international community that Cambodia has ownership of the land as Thailand is refusing to allow foreign troops to enter the area.

Praphan said of the government's attempt to disperse the yellow-shirt rally is an attempt to cover up its failure in having signed an agreement that put Thailand at a disadvantage to Cambodia. He said that letting the rally continue may reduce the ruling Democrat Party's popularity in the upcoming election.

Praphan said the group’s legal team will submit a malfeasance complaint against the prime minister with the National Anti-Corruption Commission today for allowing the country to lose territory. An impeachment motion will also be launched against the PM.
