Suvarnabhumi Airport ready for inaugural flight

BANGKOK: -- Bangkok's new international airport, or the Suvarnabhumi Airport, is now ready for the inaugural flight of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra on September 29, Airport of Thailand Public Co., Ltd. announced here on Tuesday.

Preparations for the inaugural flight by New Bangkok International Airport Co., Ltd., as well as Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd. and other agencies concerned have nearly 100 per cent completed, according to Airport of Thailand Public Co., Ltd.'s Senior Executive Vice President Somchai Sawasdiphol.

They include air traffic control and navigation systems, as well as the construction and surface of the airport's eastern runway, which are now 100 per cent completed, he disclosed.

The prime minister and cabinet members' Air Bus 340-600 flight is scheduled to leave the Don Muang Airport at 8:29 a.m. and to land on the Suvarnabhumi Airport's eastern runway at 09:09 a.m. on the day.

Mr. Somchai told TNA that the construction and surface, as well as other preparations of new airport's western runway, where a Boeing 747-400 flight of journalists will land on the day, and the Gate E1, where the prime minister would walk through a passenger terminal had been nearly completed and would be certainly ready for the auspicious flight debut on September 29, he said.

The prime minister is also scheduled to test run the airport's immigration, customs and luggage service systems before leaving the Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Security measures had also been well-prepared with about 1,000 security officers to be on duty on the day, said Mr. Somchai.

Other activities marking the auspicious openning of the airport, including a mini-marathorn running competition, will also be organized at the airport on the day, from 05:00 a.m. to 02:00 p.m., according to Mr. Somchai.

The government earlier announced that the official openning of the Suvarnabhumi Airport would, however, postponed to next year due to delay of the construction of some parts of the airport's structures.

Heard that POO Air is gonna try and sneak in and make the first landing the day before.

Its expected to take off early morning (in the dark) from the secret airfield at U -Ta-pao and will carry a cargo of Ping Pong balls and hot air.

Volunteer passengers were advertised for in a local Pati newspaper for the first world breaking flight but it seems that even from there no body wanted to take the chance.(apart from one CHAV who lives in soi 8 but rejected on moral grounds)

Stories of protestors spreading shreded marmalade on the runways have been denied and are its seems totally without foundation. :o (more than can be said about the runways)

I notice that K. Thaksin's runway is ready but the journos may have a bumpy landing... :o

So what's the difference between an auspicious opening and an official opening? Sounds more like a suspicious opening to me on 29-Sep... :D

We had a Thai project manager who said that.

It took another year and a lot of work to fix the remaining 10%

Doesn't only happen in Thailand astral... most people that are involved with projects know that the final 10% to completion takes 90% of the effort.

The SUVARNABHUMI International Airport today demonstrated its technical competency to the Thai and foreign mass media, before the first auspicious flight this Thursday (September 29th).

I believe that they are planning to fly north towards Nakhon Sawan/Phitsanulok, turn, and fly back to the new airport. Probably not a good morning to be flying from Don Muang.

THE MEDIA HAS BEEN DISALLOWED TO COLLECT FOOTAGES OF TODAY'S PLANE LANDING AT SUVARNABHUMI

The Deputy Minister of Transport, Gen. CHAINANT CHAROENSIRI (ชัยนันท์ เจริญศิริ) is working to complete the improvement of the surroundings at SUVARNABHUMI International Airport within six months.

Gen. CHAINANT revealed that the Airbus 340-400 and the Boeing 747-400 successfully landed on the runway today. However, the mass media was disallowed to collect footages during the test-landing of the two aircrafts.

As for the first official auspicious flight this Thursday (September 29th), the public will be allowed to witness the surroundings around the airport. However, they will not be allowed to visit the passenger terminal due to security purposes.

The Deputy Minister of Transport said the remaining construction in the airport will have to be completed soon, in order to be in time for the official opening in June next year. Over the next six months, the bare surroundings around the airport will be quickly improved.

How much will it cost to reach this new airport by taxi from say Silom Road because it seems that this will still be the only way to reach there ? :o

It would have so much nicer to have public transport infrastructure as

we;; the same way they built Hong Kong`s new airport....................

And will the taxi`s be able to use a faster route such as a tollway

as they do to the exisiting airport at the moment ?

I visited the new airport last week and I can tell you that it is far from completed, did you read in the newspaper today that the journalists were not allowed in because everything was cleaned for the PM? Yeah right, it's a mess in there and apart from some desks nothing really is completed. The road to the airport is not even completed so I bet the PM had to leave over a dirt road.

The engineer that showed us around told us that they probably going to open next september but they have to cut back the test period.

Indeed welcome to Thailand :o

Nice pics !!!

I live not far from it and I can hear airplanes. It seems that they had a test run yesterday with Thai Airways, so I guess Toxin won't be first technically :D

There is no connection from the main road. Only trucks and constructive vehicles are going in.

Another major issue is the highway is not large enough if they want the airport to become the new Hub of Asia :o

Seems like a lot of poor planning as usual.

So that explains why there was a departure to Suvarnabhumi showing on the departure screens at Don Muang yesterday morning. It would have been interesting to go to the gate the planes were leaving from to see who was on board - it was listed like a regular departure...

...a flight from Don Muang to Nakhon Nowhere. Perhaps the most practical way to get to the new airport for the time being. :o

I noticed a lot of people visiting my site from this forum so I put some more pictures on from the new airport.

The picture in the Business Today newspaper I found particulary funny, it was taken in just the right angle. It looked like the airport was completed and the images on TV I just saw were taken in the dark.

From what I heard they're now going to open next year at the King's birthday.

By the way, please leave a comment on my forum with suggestions on my site, I just started it and appreciate all ideas you can give me,

My Webpage

Thanks :o

Got to love the land of smile. Newspaper reports spokewomen for new airport stating reporters were not allowed into the 90-94 % completed terminal because" We just cleaned the floors and the will get dirty if people come in and we will not have time to clean them again" This is a direct quote I kid you not. Please look at photos taken this week of the 90 94 % finished product. post-10698-1127963898_thumb.jpgpost-10698-1127963923_thumb.jpgpost-10698-1127963953_thumb.jpgpost-10698-1127963977_thumb.jpgpost-10698-1127963999_thumb.jpg

Well... today's the big day...  :o

Any news yet?  :D

The Thai television channels just all had live coverage of the event, so I guess it's official: Suvarnabhumi Airport is now open!

I suppose I will never understand the face-saving cultural factors at play but today's little dog and pony show and its supposed implication (i.e. the airport is ready for flights on-schedule) strikes me as being the definition of disingenuous. :D

The 1st 38 minutes are flight training. The actual flight is just under a minute. Finding a safe place to park will take 1 more minute. :o
