Charlie'S Fish And Chips

Had lunch at Yunee's this afternoon. Had the F&C no mushy peas, I forgot. Did have two cokes. 235 baht. I am no fish expert let alone F&C expert but I thought the F&C was OK not great but OK. Fish was lite and fluffy and the chips were good but the chips were more like fry's than the British chips. I did thank the fish could have been larger. Over all the food was good. The restaurant looks as if Charlies was still there and I'm pretty sure that Yunee was Charlies cook. I wish here and her venture will but I just don't see the customer base to support a specialty restaurant.

I agree and I too wish her all the best, but it's hard to see how Yunee's can be competitive without providing something extra special.

On Friday, before leaving for Bangkok I had the Fish and Chips special at Gecko Garden. Two fair sized pieces of fish, chips, salad and two can's of coke light 145 Baht. The F&C was 105 Baht, the cans of coke only 20 Baht each and the place was packed.

re ... Now if someone can post one of Mr. Kelly's F & C

sorted .... dave2

ps ... i could hardly eat all of kellys coz i was sooo stuffed.

i think the pun puns chips look like wedgies as well ( and i hate them ) but all that fish looks good

Being in the area and mighty partial to Mushy peas I tried Kelly's yesterday. Had their medium fish n chips + peas for 140 baht.

I would say that the bar has been set. Best battered fish I've had in a long time, including in the UK.

Go Kelly :)

Here is a pic of a Pun Pun F&C.

Now if someone can post one of Mr. Kelly's F & C ,maybe we can start off the 2011 version of a F&C long running thread.

I've been down to Yunee 's today. Yes it was good but for 210 for a fish and chips and coke?? I would like to say that hers chips were excellent she does better than I can do them ( out here that is). I'd like to know how she does them. Fish was OK nothing more than ok. I'd say all in all probably the best in town.

Bye the way the pic of Pun Pun Fish and Chips look <deleted>! Did someone say it's owned by an American? I guess American just don't get the concept of fish and chips any more than the Thais do. For a start Chips are not a side dish for the fish. It's Fish AND Chips also it's eaten with salt and vinegar not tartar sauce.

I'm no Brit but Pun Pun Fish and Chips are good! I don't judge food by the pictures of it on the internet either. Yes, the chips are wedge shape but they are massive big fat ones, not like little potato wedges. The pic actually does not do justice for the portions. I can eat a lot and I can't remember many times that I couldn't finish a meal, especially in Thailand, but I couldn't get through those chips at Pun Puns. Side dish, Ha! BTW; I doubt they will force you to use the tartar sauce. The pic actually shows malt vinegar as well! I don't really see the problem with giving the customer the choice. This isn't communism!

Oh ya, there is a F&C's day too but I don't remember which one...

OK, I`m sold.

The last time I tried some fish and chips at one of those specialised fish and chip places, Charle`s I think, or was it the another one? it was awful, AWFUL.

A complete dump and the fish and chips were just a basic fry up. My nearest and dearest makes a better fish and chips dinner at home.

I will come and try out your fry up and if it`s not as good as you claim, I will send my girlfriend round to sort you out, at no extra cost to you.

Thank you for posting your prices, I wish others would.

That's not a bad price at all Mr G - a bit more expensive than some, but a lot less than a few others. Well compensated by a good Friday special plus a 10% discount for coming clean and ID'ing yourself. So as I see it, you fall into the category of good F&C at reasonable prices. If you were open now I'd come along - I get F&C craving's at strange times.

For the record, Uptheos never comes clean with his ID for discount purposes, as he doesn't want to penny pinch from businesses that are already finding it hard and if I did take the discount, I can assure you that it would go straight back in the staff tip box.

Oh yes, nearly forgot.

How do I get to the Pun Pun.

Please explain in a way that even a thicko like me can understand.

Sorry for the delay in answering BJu

The Pun Pun is located at 321 Charoenrat Rd.

Charoenrat is the street that runs along the east bank of the river.

Google Maps has us pinned... Pun Pun Guest house and Restaurant

If you were to come from the west side of the river, cross over the bridge at the east of Thapae Rd. [Narrowat] then turn left. You would see the Riverside, the Good View, the Brassierie, then shortly come to the traffic light this would be the intersection of the Nakornping bridge, Continue north on Charoenrat and almost immediately is the Rimping Condo on your left. Continue north approx another 300m and you see another large comdo on your left, which is the Embassy House Condo. The very next entrance is The Pun Pun.

If you click on the yellow Pun Pun banner on the Chiang Mai Forum, and and click the contact tab, up will pop a google map

Hope this helps.

Thanks for asking and hope to see you.

I was in Gecko Garden today for the F&C special and I must say that for the first time I was very disappointed.

The two very small pieces of fish appeared to have been very heavily coated in batter to make them look bigger than they really were.

It was a bit like eating fried crunchy batter with a hint of fish inside and certainly nowhere as good as on all previous visits.

The salad on the plate appeared bigger than usual, which makes me think someone was trying to produce an optical illusion.

Maybe I was just unlucky and as it's the first time I've been disappointed, I won't give up on them yet.

ipso facto :)

The fish WAS smaller David and as I said it was mostly batter with some white pieces of fish showing through. I know if I'm biting into fish or just batter and this was mostly batter.

It's no big deal, it's the first time I've ever been disappointed there.

Had Fish, Chips, Peas, Bread & Butter today at Kelly s.

Excellent.

A mate tried to have F + C at Yunee's but found place closed in afternoon.

Any Idea's on timings ?

Just back from Cha Am, Hua Hin.

The Victoria in HH, has/had best F+C in Thailand. I complemented the owner and he grumpily replied

'Should be I've been cooking F+C since 1953'

Outstanding F+C but well lets says he is from Yorkshire which should explain his Manner.

Closed as of 1 April. New place open by 1 May on Soi 80.

you have had only one bad meal at the gecko bar why would you come on a public forum and complain about it .

In my eyes thats very disrespectful to the owner .

Are you making reference to another post? May help the rest of us if you would/could elaborate on what you meaning is.

If the guy has mentioned he had a bad meal at a certain restaurant, so what?

This is not being disrespectful to the owner, but only describing his experience for something that he did not get for free.

I keep in mind that these restaurant owners are not my mates, I am there for a meal and they provide a service for a price. It is purely a customer, business owner relationship. I have no commitments, allegiance or loyalties to them.

In Chiang Mai there are only a very few decent farang orientated eating houses.

The Dukes

Red Lion

Hoffbrauhau

The Pub

UN Irish Pub

The Olde Bell

The rest of the smaller establishments I consider as insignificant.

They are doing very nicely, thank you. I would like to see some new decent farang orientated restaurants open in town that would give the present businesses some serious competition, also to end the limited choice of good restaurants available to tourists and those living here alike.

I wonder why there are so little developments within the Chiang Mai entertainment industry? Is it because these large businesses have an unwritten monopoly in the area or just that there is not enough business to go around? I don`t know, you experts out there please tell me?

So there you are, the cat among the pigeons. Lets see if we can get some sensible answers without the need to slag me off for my comments.

Your list of 'decent' restaurants, one of which is extremely mediocre with over-salted, over-priced re-heated food, fails to mention a few excellent Chiang Mai restaurants; i.e. the Heidelberg Restaurant, Coco Salad and Kelly's all in San Sai, Butter is Better in town, and of course the Salsa Kitchen on Huay Kaew Road.

I'm not sure where the Heidelberg restaurant is - sounds German cuisine?

I've yet to try Coco salad and Kelly's as they are out of town, but have only heard good things from people who have been there.

I had my first meal at Salsa Kitchen a couple of weeks ago, enjoyed it very much and thought it good value.

Butter is Better is Better every time I go there......one of Chiang Mai's gems.thumbsup.gif
