- expressway, often I see 80km/h, but GPS 105km/h

- toll way

any ideas ?

Normally cars/bikes 90 km/h, pickup, bus and truck without trailer 80 km/h, truck with trailer 60 km/h. In cities as quick as noted on the sign "City Limit", normally 50-60 km/h. Some highway around Bangkok are rumored to have a limit of 120 km/h, but I never tried it. My last speeding ticket was on the bypass around Hua Hin with 123 km/h...

Legally the police have every right to cite anyone driving faster than 90km/h. Sometimes they let it go to 100, 110 or even 120km/h.

Expressways (most of them Tollways) are 120 kmh, but in rush hours often reduced to 80kmh with lit signs. Bikes, large trucks and pickups with people in bed not allowed on Expressways.

Highways (1,2 and 3 digit roads), 90 kmh, except within City Limit.

Most local roads 90 kmh, except within City Limit

Speedchecks (radar and laser is used) are usually set to not respond to speeds lower than 120 kmh, except outside Kings residence in Hua Hin 60?kmh

Max fine for speeding is 1.000 baht, Highway speedcheck roadblocks usually 200 baht

Expressways auto speed cameras (and red light cameras), fines (minimum 400 baht) are mailed to registered owner, and must be payed before road tax can be renewed.

thanks for the good info !! let summarise :

City Limit and local road, from 60 km/h to 90 km/h

Highway ( 1-digit, 2x-digit, 3xx-digit ), 90 km/h

Expressway ( paid toll way ), peak hour 80 km/m, off peak 120 km/h ( that I never see even 5 in the morning to airport )

then

the 'police margin' is ranged from 90 km/h to 120 km/h, depends on their mood.

wow, I see Thai drivers WAY OUT of this !! while I am 100+ km/h on the highway with no street light, they take over on my left in a flash !

ehhm, if someone needs to overtake you on the left, you are to slow for the right lane ;)

being in the right lane without overtaking is illegal, and fined with 200-1000 baht. More common fine than speeding fines, as no equipment needed to catch you

When I got my first car here 8 years ago, I asked some Police friends about speed limits. As fast as your car can go. Thailand is changing

The first time I noticed a speed check was in Hua Hin outside the Kings residence about 7 years ago. They had been gifted a radar from Swedish Police. Now they are very well equipped with camera boxes, radars and lasers.

yeah, I do confused by the driving manner here :-)

while I am on the right lane in 120 km/h and that perhaps the speed limit, and for example another car chasing at 160 km/h in 2m and flashing all the way. IF I give way ( and that is no problem ) then I encorage a wrong doing of speeding. if anyone enjoy 160 km/m, find his/her solution, don't bother others.

would I get a fine on a right lane if I am on the speed limit already ? I know from other countries, if I drive slow and 'all time' on the fast lane, the police would welcome me with open arms.

not sure about 'open arms' ! In the UK you're supposed to 'keep left' at all times unless overtaking, not really enforced but the rule is there.

In Thailand you're also supposed to keep to the inside lane unless you're overtaking something, not sit in the outside lane holding everything up. Even if you're driving at the speed limit you're not supposed to be there, it's for overtaking or turning at the u-turn point.

you could be fined for doing 140kmh in right lane, if you are not overtaking. Fined for being in the right lane

Getting a Thai DL by testing you learn this, and it is how it works out on the roads. You are not supposed to give way from right lane, you are supposed to stay away from it except when overtaking. As a comparison, try keeping 120 kmh in left lane at German Autobahn, and you will soon be rearended and in fault causing accident :whistling:

VIP/ Police convoys usually do 160kmh, and are allowed to use right lane full time

Posted

ah . . . I catch you :-) the right lane here is basically the overtaking lane, and not suppose to stay on the right lane for long.

so, the slow lane is on the left, and the fast lane here is the second to the right. occasionally we could drive into the right lane for overtaking.

no problem, and thanks I learn today. I will be a good boy :-)

In Western counties that would be true but TIT where it is allowed to overtake on the left on roads with 3 or more lanes.

As in most of Asia the rule is not 'keep left unless overtaking' but 'slow traffic on the left, fast tarffic on the right'

Posted

yeah, 'overtaking on the left' is very dangerous ! since most drivers including myself would give way and start changing lane to left - crash :-(

'overtaking on left' is consider illegal from where I came from. here, 3 lanes or even on the narrow shoulder :-)

I drive from bkk to isaan with 110-150 km/hour... Usually when not many cars its on 130 and cruisecontrol on. I use rightlane nonstop, only switch lanes to left when i see a uturn ahead or when someone is approaching me with higher speed. Safety reasons for both me and other traffic as well as being polite towards other traffic :-)

I do start flashing all lights max when on right lane and someone is not moving after at least 10 secs, if still not moving i slowly (still noticeable by other traffic) pass on left lane, ofcourse without the middlefinger because i dont want to make a scene...

Ps. Anyone? Good radar+laser scanner/detector which actually works?

Great information here. Just wonder is there an official website(in English) that we can access to get a copy of the rules?

Never had speeding tickets in my 47 yo. life and i like to drive fast , driven in Sweden (of cos) and many other european countries both as a truck driver and private , also driven some 2500 km in Los last year ... thing is you need to have your eyes opened , see places and situations where they might be .. and of cos .. don´t behave stupid , you have to care about others even if you drive abit faster! biggrin.gif

Now as im also getting older and probably will recive tickets in the future i will not grunt as 1000b is nothing to cry about in my book , if i like to drive abit faster i have to accept the price , it´s just 2 short times anyway and i dont even bother to go ST anymore! whistling.gif
