At least 9 dead after car bomb destroys Iraqi military base

BAGHDAD, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) -- At least 9 people were killed and dozens were injured after a suicide bomb attack on an Iraqi military base just north of Baghdad, officials said Monday.

The attack occurred when an explosive-filled truck crashed into the military base in Kanaan, Iraq, which is located around 70 kilometers (43 miles) northeast of the country's capital, Baghdad, and roughly 10 kilometers (6 miles) south of Baquba in Diyala province, Press TV reported.

The injured were shifted to local hospitals, but the death toll could rise as the attack completely destroyed the military base and damaged surrounding buildings. Local authorities cordoned off the area as rescue teams work and investigations are carried out.

Iraq's Diyala province has been considered an important al-Qaeda stronghold, especially after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
