Toyota Discrimination Policy

Recommended Posts

I intended to buy a Toyota pick up today.

However, when the sales person told my better half that she would need a 30% deposit "because you have a Farang boyfriend", I told them to stick their car up their arse.

My missus is now going to be a proud owner of a Ford Ranger.

Never had a problem with Toyota, never had a problem with Honda, never had a problem with Suzuki and recently no problems with Mazda, maybe they just did not like the look of you.

If you were intending buying the pick up what would be the problem with giving a 30% deposit anyway!!!

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm, disappointing.

But, hope it just wasn't this individual sales guy working something. ;)

He works for Toyota what difference does it make? The staff should be vetted and trained better if that's the case..

Not sure though CH why not buy it anyway as that's how it's done here in LOS according to some here :whistling: ...... Good for you voting with your feet against a crap policy regardless of where it came from...

Maybe a nice follow up note and or email to Toyota's corporate would be a good idea too for maximum effect.. I just read of a similar disappointment on another thread only in that case it was related to Toyota's out of area warrantee coverage..

Because the buyer determines the terms of the deal within reasonable limits and not just because you're falang is it justified to require more down... That kind of thinking and dismissal is why they try that in the first place as too many people willfully accepting of that type of policy...

It is not the amount of the deposit, it is the fact that a HIGHER deposit was required because my partner has a Falang boyfriend.

I don't like the look of me but that hardly makes it right that she would have been offered 20% deposit had I not been there !

Is it only me that is offended by this ?

I dont see the issue unless a higher finance rate was being quoted as well, assuming of course your farang partner is not skint and had full intentions of actually paying off the finance.

You don't see an issue ?

You don't think it is an issue that one Thai customer is told that she must find 30% deposit for the sole reason that she has a Farang boyfriend ?

From a credit risk perspective I could argue that by having a Farang boyfriend (suitably healed) should result in a lower deposit being required.

The standard 'risk' with Toyota is to put down 25% then no further questions are asked and a guarantor is not required. Less than 25% deposit and a guarantor is required. I see no issue with THAT standard policy.

As usual, a couple of idiotic replies.

This is a racialist policy and totally unwarranted and unacceptable. If it was a try-on by the sales staff I hope he/she gets the sack!

I would go all guns firing with an e-mail to the President of Toyota Thailand and a similar one to Japan. probably won't even get a reply! They, through their stupidity have lost a sale, and with the current situation in Japan, that is an important loss.

Full marks to Ford for completing a sale with you - and I believe enticed you with a 10% down payment with 0% finance!

Unless there was no intention of actually paying out the vehicle then no, I don't really see the issue of the extra 5% deposit requested.

You see no issue Spoonman? <deleted> pathetic!

This is discrimination!

No farang present and 20% down payment - but Thai lady having Farang boyfriend is told 30% deposit required!

I hope next time you go shopping your bill is loaded 50% because you are a farang!

I hope Cardholder hauls Toyota over the coals for this. I would!

Dont see anywhere in the thread that Toyota was rorting anyone on the price of the vehicle, as for the farang discrimination, happens daily out here mate.

What is pathetic is someone who had Toyota monies now buying a Ranger, talk about a disappointed compared to the Vigo !!!!

Sorry about your luck and sorry about the FORD thing. :D

Seriously, this was some racist BS they tried to pull on you. I would have told them the same thing but would go to the other Toyota dealer and get it from there, I am sure it was that particular sales guy or a particular dealer. I would also send the email to Toyota Thailand and CC to Toyota Japan.

And to Spoonman, it's not a issue of extra 5% or 10%, it is the wording "because you have a Farang boyfriend". IF you don't see the problem with that, then you need to grow up before you post a reply.

I can see how this so called discrimination is upsetting, I once stopped to have my motorbike tyre pumped up, normal price maybe 1 or 2 bht I had to pay 10bht as man told my GF Falang have many money, seriously this is Thailand and duel priceing and the odd strange occourance like yours is common place accept it or go back to your home country, my truck from Toyota 5000 bht deposit, car from Mazda 5000 deposit but was paying cash would be different for finance I guess. stay happy...

Been in Thailand nearly 2 yrs now and only once have I heard this you have a Falang BF thing and that was from an old man, every dealer I have been to have been fantastic and could not do enough to help me so this discrimination you experienced is very rare, but why on earth would you go and buy a Ford Ranger when there are many more Toyota dealers who would more than likely have treated you with respect!!!

Nobody has mentioned the price - just the fact that they want a higher down payment because of the buyers association with a farang. "because you have a Farang boyfriend"

Farang discrimination need not be a problem if it is dealt with as Cardholder did.

Totally disagree. Typical respo nse! This was either Toyota policy or that of the sales person. At the end of the day it was a major loss for Toyota, an win for Ford and an even bigger win for cardholder with a 10% deposit and interest free finance.

Don't overlook the fact Kenny that this was a THAI person buying, not a farang. The Thai was being discriminated against because she has a farang boyfriend.

Is that acceptable to you?

No it is not acceptable to me or anyone but what can you do in a country that does have this duel priceing thing, do you think this countries attitude to us will ever change, unfortunately no never in a million yrs, if he sends email or writes to Toyota he will never get a reply, you just have to bite your lip when living here not good but something you just have to do.

If you quietly like to bend to their rules and pull your pants down - up to you buddy. I have done the same thing as a cardholder did, and I have done it many times, not in a car buying business though. I don't even try to brgain the price or argue, I just turn around and walk away. Who loose at the end - gready Thais!

I'd suggest that this is fact at the instruction of the finance provider. They're the one carrying the risk, not the deater. The dealer just wants to sell a unit. Dealer would like to offer 0% deposit, 1% interest, and no income or credit reference requirements. They get paid anyway at sale by financier. They don't care if you repay or not. The dealer will usually be pushing the finance company to do the loan.

Bought a new Isuzu couple years back. Suited me to pay 50% down. Even then the financing company insisted on a on a 4 year repayment schedule. I'd wanted 2-3 years.

My TW has savings and property but no real income. The farang's (me) financial position is often a little difficult to assess. I wonder how many farang (not saying the OP) meet their dream wife on their 2nd week in Pattaya or Phuket and want their new soul-mate to have a new car. Deposit, 3 payments... then meet an even more perfect wife on their 2nd vacation. Payments cease.

I understand the resentment in this thread but can see the other side.

Just re-read OP. Didn't actually say intended to finance remainder. Did I assume wrongly?

I doubt it had anything to do with the finance company.

Who lost?

1) Toyota

2) The sales person through lost commission

3) The sales person's family, through a loss of commission

4) THAILAND.

If the terms of any deal are unacceptable - walk away. As Cardholder found there are others who will not be so greedy.

One day -not sure when- Thai people will get the message!

I was told the same thing at Ford...something about 25% if you have cosignatory and 40% if not...

Did not buy yet because they don't make a two door 4WD Hi Trac...strange...only way to get one is to get reg 4WD and add the Hi Trac accessories.Or so the little lady agreed once I suggested it.

Seems vehicle dealerships do not train their staff to be the quintessential car salesmen we all know and love.Very low on organization re brochures spec sheets and pricing sheets..both Ford and Mazda sales people disappeared for many minutes to retrieve this information or made phone calls!....Then while we were in the sales process they wandered off !!! f..g amazing!..found it very frustrating at both Ford and Mazda ( also no 4wd two doors made??) To cap it off both dealerships made a couple of follow up calls to me using non English speaking personnel...my problem I know ....but they knew of my handicap!

Why would I consider bending over when I have never had a problem here except for the old man of course. 1 truck(Toyota) 1 car(Honda but cancelled) 1 motorbike(Suzuki) 1 car(Mazda) all these dealers treated me with respect and even offered me a good discount without asking so I have no need to bend over for anyone.

I agree with your points. For these reasons doesn't it make even more sense that it is the finance company rather than the dealer? The dealer loses if they are near to closing a deal and it falls over if the prospect is p%ssed off by a condition (30%) and walks.

I don't understand why a dealer gain by asking the higher deposit. Aren't they paid the remainder by the finance company.

Forgive me if I'm being a bit thick. Happens.

Morning. Just up after a good nights sleep and have reviewed the 'overnight' posts.

I should perhaps have made it clear for Spoonman's sake (as Prakhonchai Nick did in one post) - this is a purchase by my Thai girlfriend and she is being discriminated against.

Yes, it is my money and yes, I could buy for cash. I don't wish to as I want to protect cash for other projects.

Therefore, I was looking for the best vehicle in my price range and I wanted finance over 4 years. The specifics all become part of the buying decision.

Toyota initially edged on corporate status, reputation and quality of vehicle. However, that edge was not big enough that it could not be lost on such a discriminatory policy.

At the end of the day Ford offered a 10% deposit with 0% finance over 4 years (I had to point out the availability of that offer because the salesman did not know). The comparative deal saves me 124,000 Baht over the 4 year period and, frankly, the Ford is a decent vehicle.

I will be emailing Toyota later this week. Whether it is a finance company requirement (rather than Toyota), a company like Toyota should not be assocoated with such discrimination.
