UN and Iraq sign agreement to support development programs

2011-03-15 01:38:02 GMT+7 (ICT)

UNITED NATIONS (BNO NEWS) -- Three agencies of the United Nations and Iraq on Monday signed an agreement to support the implementation of development programs in the Middle East nation.

"These signings ensure the UN support in many critical areas of the Government of Iraq’s National Development Plan, including the attainment of its Millennium Development Goal targets by 2015 to improve the well-being of the Iraqi population," said Christine McNab, the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq.

The three UN agencies, UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), UN Development Program (UNDP) and UN Population Fund (UNFPA), agreed to support the Iraqi Government's development agenda over the next four years at an estimated cost of $600 million.

"Activities will be undertaken to build Iraq's capacity to deliver essential services to those most in need, create employment opportunities, and strengthen mechanisms to improve governance and protect the fundamental rights of all citizens," added McNab.

UNICEF, UNDP and UNFPA will contribute to the creation of a public sector that delivers high quality and equitable services, especially in education, water and sanitation, and health services through the implementation of a public sector modernization program.

The three UN agencies will also provide assistance to the rehabilitation and construction of power stations, the clearance of mines and other remnants of war, and establishing environmental programs in cooperation with local governments and communities.

The agreement will also stimulate the creation of jobs by supporting the private sector through a development program that will promote equal opportunities for men and women in education and employment.

Furthermore, the UN will intensify efforts to strengthen the capacity of key institutions, such as the Iraqi Commission of Integrity and the Council of Representatives and Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).

Finally, the UN will support the establishment of a human rights commission to support the rule of law and justice for all, including women and children.
