webfact
Police lose battle to regain protest site from PAD By SATIEN VIRIYAPANPONGSA, ATTAPHUM ONGKULNA THE NATION Police have failed to persuade People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) protesters to vacate some areas they currently occupy for the annual Red Cross Fair. The protesters, on the other hand, have claimed a small win - protecting their toilets. At 5am yesterday, hundreds of police lined up around the protest area - including Makkawan Rangsan Bridge, Misakawan Intersection and Chamai Maruchet Bridge - causing tension among the protesters who mobilised more supporters from outside the site. The police retreated four hours later. The mission was supervised by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol Lt-General Jakthip Chaijinda and Assistant Police Commissioner-General Pol Lt-General Worapong Chiewpreecha. National police chief Pol General Wichean Potephosree said the police were deployed to provide security for Bangkok Metropolitan Administration officers preparing the venue for the annual Red Cross Fair - who wanted to remove the protesters' 48 toilets. However, the protesters mobilised over 100 men including guards near the police line and appeared ready to fight. The Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO) evaluated the situation and decided to retreat. Wichean, as CAPO director, said enforcement of the Internal Security Act would expire next Wednesday, and it may not be extended if the protesters don't instigate violence. Meanwhile, the authorities are considering whether the ISA should be extended to cover more areas. Wichean said the fair was due to start from March 30, so work getting the venue must begin. Metropolitan Police spokesman Maj-General Piya Uthayo said police provided protection to BMA officers who tried to remove the toilets and trash on Rajdamnoen Avenue in front of the Education Ministry, but had not reclaimed the area from protesters. "The PAD blocked the area so no BMA or police officers could enter. The protesters also threw bottles at the officers, hurting two of them. The incidents were recorded and the wrongdoers will be arrested," he said. Piya said that Pol Maj-General Wichai Sangprapai, commander of Metropolitan Police Division 1, had been assigned to talk with the protesters. Police also suggested that the Thai Patriots' Network, another group rallying near Government House, should gather near the Rama VIII Bridge or the Finance Ministry instead, but the protesters had not responded. PAD leader Chamlong Srimuang said the government failed in trying to get the protesters to disperse. He said a retired general had promised to "protect" them. -- The Nation 2011-03-

virtualtraveller
I suppose it's all in the verb. How on earth do you succeed in removing protesters by 'persuading' them to leave. It's nothing to do with the army, they would have them out of there in a day if they had the authority. Someone, somewhere is instructing the police to go easy on the PAD and let them continue harassing this government. What a joke law enforcement is here. The police destroyed the Red Shirts and shot them dead. However, the police did NOTHING and the government did NOTHING to the yellows when they took over the airport. When did the police do any shooting of red shirts? I would imagine that the yellow shirts that were killed and injured by defective tear gas canisters shot by the police would not think that the police did nothing. Your last point is right. The government at the time didn't do anything when the yellows took over the airport.

The police destroyed the Red Shirts and shot them dead. However, the police did NOTHING and the government did NOTHING to the yellows when they took over the airport. The police did nothing to control the reds entrenching themselves in Bangkok; if they had done their job there wouldn't had been need for the army to get involved. I saw a very pathetic scene on the 19th, intersection of Ekamai and Sukhumvit, a single red shirt started to pull flammable materials into the intersection and set his own fire there, there where at least three police officers right there just watching one man single handled stopping the traffic and creating a fire on one of Bangkok's main intersections; they did nothing at all. At best they are lazy or cowards, at worst they were colluding with the Red Shirts. I would had hoped that since the pathetic performance of the police then they would had taken measures, but apparently they are happy to keep being a source of shame to the country. Bakseedaa
Time to call in the snipers. The government snipers only shoot red shirts, not their own. The soldiers retaliated against Red Shirt terrorists, PAD, as much as most of us do not agree with them, have not been shooting or firing grenades at the police and soldiers..... nor at innocent bystanders... remember Sala Deng BTS.... and the "Red Shirts had days of warnings to lay down their weapons and go home after months of protests and disruptions to Bangkok... If you were in Wisconsin you would be on the wrong side too, no doubt, calling for the imprisonment, beating, whatever of the people as they stand up to government oppression. It really sickens me when farangs throw their lot in the with opressive, racist Thai elite and give their blessings to oppression of the poor in Thailand. londonthai
from another thread: "Eight companies of police from Metropolitan Bureau and an anti-riot unit with batons and shields early Monday morning reinforced protest site ranks" that's on the top of the regular cops around the site. looks, like there was a phone call from somebody at the top, as it was the case with the airport occupation, to allow yellows to do, what they were ordered to do by their powerful protectors. Someone forgot the facts. - The Police was (and is) utterly incompetent in crowd control. No matter what color the shirts of the crowd. - The Army dispersed the Red Shirts, not the police - When the Yellow shirts occupied the airports, the "red shirt" government PPP was in power and did nothing, because as said, the police is totally incompetent. Goody for you, you're an agent against change in the world. Wow, the degree of your ignorance is extraordinary. Do you honestly think this is a people's movement? Do you really believe this is a grass roots uprising against the elite? If you do, I could offer you the Brooklyn Bridge, with 1,000 acres of surrounding land, for only a 100,000 baht deposit. The red shirts were never about seizing the power from the Elite. It was always about finding a way for Thaksin to regain power. He bought the allegiance of these poor peasants you refer to. Be has been desperately trying to regain the power he never in a million years thought he would lose. Had he been willing to pay the taxes on the Shin sale, he may still be in power today. He is depending on gullible people like you, to regain power. He is about as noble as Gaddafi, Chavez, Kim Jung IL, and the Castro brothers. Hmmmmm "The police destroyed the redshirts and shot them dead" ? Here I was thinking that the police were the ones that used RDX laced chinese military ordnance on the PAD in Oct 2008, and that the military was used to quell the armed red insurrectionist uprising in BKK in April/May 2010! TimeBandit2
The police need to cordon off the area with blue ribbons and inflatable yellow bears, passing out candy canes and gummy bears, playing happy music and sprinkling everyone with glitter! The police themselves could dress up in two piece jackass costumes and let the protesters take turns kicking them in the ass! At least that wouldn't be as embarrassing as what's going on now. anterian
Gaddafi is winning because he has his own private loyal army. The PAD win for the same reason only in their case it is THE army, or to be precise the home regiments. Reds and yellows are just pawns in the clan wars of the elite.
