I have a Samsung Captivate with a broken (cracked Screen). Does anyone know if I can get a replacement and repair in Bangkok? I hear that a Samsung Galaxy S i9000 can be repaired in MBK/Panthip/Fortune Town. They have the LCD/Digitizer spares in stock. But the Captivate model is different and normally sold only in the US at at&t. Any experience and help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

The i9000 (Samsung Galaxy S) and the SGH-i897 (Samsung AT&T Captivate) have different LCD & Digitizer Assemblies owing to the physical differences in the cases. They are are not plug-compatible. I guess you could ask if a local Samsung service center could order one for you from Korea or the U.S. Otherwise you'll have to order one from the U.S. or return your unit for (warranty?) service.

There are some walk-throughs showing how to replace this unit.

Some parts suppliers do have stock.

I have a Cappy, great phone esp. for use in Thailand.

Did you crack just the glass on top or is the OLED screen broken also? These are a little different than most devices in that the digitizer is part of the OLED screen itself and not the top glass. If you just broke the top glass you can get a replacement on eBay for about US$30.00 (see link below). If you need to replace the OLED screen also you are looking at around US$130.00 or more for the parts. There are many listing on eBay from suppliers who will ship to Thailand. Most of these replacement screens out there are LCD not OLED so your device's display will look different if you have to replace the actual screen itself.

You can search on "Samsung i897 Captivate screen"

Thanks for your advices.

I saw the the spareparts being available on ebay and on websites like globaldirectparts.com (minimum order is 2pcs @ 105 USD) already. I just thought that someone would knew a place in BKK, where they have these parts in stock. Many people from the US have that phone and the 850Mhz 3G, that comes with that phone is ideal for Thailands 3G mess. Could well be that Samsung is the best option for me to get an original AMOLED replacement. I bought the phone with the broken screen for app. 120 USD (~4,000 THB) incl. shipping from the US via ebay and Samsung Hua Hin quoted 5,500 THB to replace a screen for the Galaxy i9000. If the the price for the Captivate i897 is similar I would have a nice phone for less then 10,000 THB.

BTW, I am from Germany and there they sell the Captivate as a "ARMANI" Edition. Apart from the Logo on the front and back (eg. Armani instead of at&t) it is identically but comes with 900 Mhz 3G (no 850 Mhz). The price tag is 20,000 to 22,000 THB on ebay and app. 26,000 and more in shops!

As soon as I have my phone repaired I will post an update.

The Captivate is also sold in Canada by Rogers.

I bought my New, in Box Captivate (16 GB) on eBay ~ 4 months ago for $400 (multiple bid auction; free shipping, I go back to the U.S. often). There are several lots now, BIN - Buy It Now - in the $415 ~ $440 range. It is a great phone; size, weight, design, feel, screen, performance, 3G, developer support, are all incredible. It is better than the Galaxy S if only because it supports 850 Mhz 3G. By far the best tech. purchase I have made to date.

Good luck getting it repaired. Without the Super AMOLED screen I can't say I'd be happy, if I had to replace it with an LCD.

One option is to look for another non-working device on ebay with an intact screen. Then you can remove the screen and install it in your other phone.
