FRANKFURT, GERMANY (BNO NEWS) -- German air carrier Lufthansa on Wednesday announced that it will order 35 new aircraft to modernize and expand its fleet.

The Lufthansa Supervisory Board approved orders for 30 aircraft of the Airbus A320neo family and 5 Boeing 777 freighters. The new aircraft will expand its current Passenger Business fleet and Logistics fleet.

The air carrier also informed that the investment in new aircraft will strengthen the competitiveness the airline. In addition, the new models will help lowering operating costs as well as noise levels and emissions.

The orders for the Passenger Business include twenty-five A320neo and five A321neo aircraft destined for continental European traffic. The airplanes are scheduled for delivery in 2016.

These aircraft will offer Lufthansa with greater fuel efficiency as they burn around 15 percent less fuel than modern day models. The airplanes will also be built with improved aerodynamics and new engines.

The business segment Logistics will receive five new Boeing 777 freighters which will be delivered by 2013. The Boeing aircraft will be sued to seize growth opportunities fuelled by rising demand in the air cargo field.

The Boeing 777F is the most modern freighter of its size available. The model features high fuel efficiency, and a particular noise footprint which is smaller than other freighters of its existing fleet.

The orders in total are valued at list price at close to $4 billion. The new 35 aircraft will be funded from the Lufthansa's own assets or from external financial resources.
