Eight teenagers killed in northern Mexico

2011-03-19 02:27:26 GMT+7 (ICT)

ZACATECAS, MEXICO (BNO NEWS) -- Eight teenagers on Friday were killed, some of them decapitated, in Zacatecas State in northern Mexico, La Jornada newspaper reported.

On Friday morning, State police officers located eight bodies piled up in Villa Cardenas in Sombrerete municipality. The discovery was made in the same place where two teenagers were killed last Monday.

Zacatecas Police chief Arturo Nahle García confirmed that eight young men were found dead and showed signs of torture and were bound and gagged. In addition, at least two of them were decapitated.

Law enforcement agents are working on identifying the bodies as well as gathering evidence. Nahle García said that it is 'highly probable' that the two Villa Cardenas cases might be related.

On Monday, two young men were found dead in Villa Cardenas. A police investigation determined that they were from the Poanas community in the neighboring Durango State.

The teenagers were abducted by unknown gunmen and transported to Zacatecas where they were executed and abandoned. Nahle García said that it is believed that the same group perpetrated the latest murders using the same modus operandi.

Zacatecas has also been marred with the organized-crime-related violence of northern Mexico. In the last three years, violence has escalated in Sombrerete, Chalchihuites and Jimenez del Teul municipalities near the Durango border.

In November 2010, three human heads were found in the garden of a government building in Chalchihuites. The heads were placed by unknown armed men.

The bodies which belonged to the heads were found about 1 kilometer away on a road. Two messages were found next to the bodies indicating that the crimes were linked to a fight between two northern drug cartels.
