TOKYO (BNO NEWS) -- Police on Sunday rescued an elderly woman and her grandson from under piles of rubble in northeast Japan, nine days after the massive earthquake and tsunami hit.

According to NHK Television, rescue workers heard a voice and found the 16-year-old boy on top of the roof of his collapsed house in Ishinomaki City in Miyagi prefecture, one of the hardest-hit areas. The doctor said the boy has a low body temperature of 28 degrees Celsius and no sensation in his left leg.

The boy's 80-year-old grandmother was in the house, but was unable to move because her legs were trapped by what appeared to be a refrigerator, according to rescuers. The woman and the boy survived by eating yogurt and other food in the fridge.

The two were sent to a Red Cross hospital in the city by a police helicopter.

The death toll from last week's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami is expected to top 15,000 in Miyagi prefecture alone, where the death toll exceeds 5,000, as reported by Kyodo news agency.

The number of dead and missing rose to 21,381 as of Sunday 9 p.m. -- 8,450 confirmed deaths and 12,931 those who are still unaccounted for, according to the National Police Agency.

Meanwhile, about 35,500 evacuees continued to endure the cold and shortages of necessities at makeshift shelters in eastern Japan, including Tokyo, as relief materials arrived from overseas.
