Pheu Thai still split over leader

Pheu Thai Party MPs will take their party list MP Mingkwan Saengsuwan to task for "overpresenting" himself as the PM candidate of Pheu Thai during last week's censure motion, a source said yesterday.

Though having the full backing of patron and ex-pm Thaksin Shinawatra, Mingkwan has yet to win the hearts of all party MPs and exercise control over the party.

Pheu Thai will hold a meeting |every Wednesday and Thursday to discuss policies for their election campaign.

Some party MPs are disappointed with Mingkwan's performance in grilling the government saying he spent too much time on the floor wooing voters instead of launching a stinging attack, causing a party setback, the source said.

Meanwhile the party felt that Pheu Thai Party chairman of MPs Chalerm Yoobamrung's announcement he is quitting the party was just a last ditch attempt to seek sympathy from Thaksin.

They said Chalerm believes the party lacked election strategists - and if he threatened to leave, Thaksin would offer him some favour in return for his remaining.

Meanwhile Pichai Naripthapan - former deputy finance minister and economic team member of the Pheu Thai Party - slammed Information and Communications Technology Minister Chuti Krairiksh for refusing to answer opposition questions over allegations he did not take True Co to court because he had close ties to the company.

Pichais said Chuti appointed Athuk Assawanant as Justice Ministry vice minister. Also, he said, relatives of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva sat on the True board of directors and its subsidiaries. Withaya Vejjajiva, Abhisit's uncle, is also on the |board.

Meanwhile Pheu Thai Party spokesman Prompong Nopparit said he would file a complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission against National Police Chief Pol General Wichean Potephosree for dropping terrorism charges against ten members of the People's Alliance for Democracy, though a total of 25 PAD had been suspected of committing crimes.

Among those not charged are Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya, General Pathompong Kasetsuk and Weera Somkwamkid.
