Israel, Russia sign space cooperation agreement

2011-03-27 22:56:38 GMT+7 (ICT)

JERUSALEM (BNO NEWS) -- The Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) and the Israel Space Agency on Sunday signed an agreement to increase cooperation in space exploration.

"The agreement, which was signed in the presence of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, enhances cooperation between the Israeli and Russian space agencies in the fields of space research, observation, navigation, medicine and biology in space, research in advanced materials and launchings," said a press release from the Israeli prime minister's office.

The head of Roscosmos, Anatoly Perminov, said that bilateral cooperation in space is at the initial stage, and required efforts to establish contacts between Russian and Israeli organizations in the space-missile industry.

"Our countries already have a positive experience of mutually advantageous partnership in the space sphere. It will suffice to say that five Israeli spacecrafts have been put into orbit with Russian launch vehicles," Perminov said, as cited by the ITAR-TASS news agency.

He also said that Russia now produces the telecom spacecraft Amos-5 for an Israeli customer.

According to Roscosmos, the agreement will allow to create organizational and legal grounds for the development of mutually advantageous cooperation connected with research and the use of space technologies for peaceful purposes.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the combination of Russia's developed industry and his country's advanced technology "could provide major benefits to both countries."

"One year ago, I told him [Technology Minister Daniel Hershovitz] that I thought that Israel's most natural partner for cooperation is Russia, which has a major infrastructure for space operations," he said.

"We have focused technology, including - I believe - six satellites in space. Soon we will have a dozen," Netanyahu added.

The Israeli Space Agency already has cooperation agreements with space agencies of the US, France, Germany, Canada, India, Ukraine, the Netherlands and the European Union and also prepares for signing agreements with Brazil and South Korea. The Israeli government adopted a five-year programme last year for the development of civil space.

It does sound like a good partnership as Israel is one of the top tech countries plus all the Russian speakers there.

Not only that but also a very smart political move. If Russia is financially involved with Israel it will help in the long run to lessen Russian support for Iran.

By the way, Russian policy is to support anyone who USA does not.

Any Nation that is not on friendly terms with USA, is always a friend of Russia-Iran, Iraq, Venezuela, Cuba, North Korea, China, Burma,Syria etc

Maybe that is why they are cozying up to Israel. Obama seems a lot more interested in being buddies with Syria and Iran. :annoyed:

Iran is a fake enemy for the US administration. Lots of sabre-rattling and rhetoric and not much else. They would like to see the current regime remain in place.

Right. That's why the USA is now relying on the Russians to send its personnel up to the space station. In case you forgot, the Russians are running the taxi service now.biggrin.gif

Russia deserves alot of credit for its ability to send reliable spacecraft up and back. And if the USA can appreciate it, so can you.

What a nonsense. The same could be said about Thailand and many other states.

The fact that the US don't make friends allover the world doesn't mean that all other countries do the same.

You have to keep in mind there are a number of levels when it comes to US and Russia relations.

Cultural, Scientific and Political.

When it comes to political, both sides always find a way to oppose each other one way or another.

US is pro Israel, Russia is rather pro Arab

US way to often has conflicts with China, Russia never has.

US does not communicate with Cuba, Russia is "best friend"

US hardly has any relations with Syria, Russia is one of the best buddies.

If it has escaped anyone's notice that the Saudi foreign minister was in Moscow at the same time! Coincidence? I rather doubt it and suspect the Israeli and Saudi authorities got together to discuss what to do about their mutual enemy Iran. I do read this as a clear sign that both Israel and Saudi Arabia are most unhappy at a perceived lack of resolve on Washington's part to reign in Iran.

Today, the picture comes into sharper focus, as Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu pays a visit to Russian Prime Minister Putin in Moscow while, in an unbelievably amazing coincidence, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal is in town at the same time.

Israeli sources outside the government reported earlier that Putin was trying to finesse a ‘discrete meeting’ between his two visitors, which he hoped would also include the Saudi Chief of Intelligence, whom Al-Faisal brought with him to Moscow.

This meeting is very likely to happen, whether we find out about or not. The odds against those four people being in the same place at the same time by chance is so miniscule that it beggars the imagination.
