Tsunami advisory issued for small part of NE Japan after 6.5 quake

TOKYO (BNO NEWS) -- A tsunami advisory was issued for a small part of Japan's northeastern coast on Monday after a strong earthquake struck off its coast, seismologists said.

The 6.5-magnitude earthquake at 7.23 a.m. local time (2223 GMT Sunday) was centered about 133 kilometers (82 miles) east of Sendai on Honshu, the country's main island. It struck about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

JMA immediately issued a tsunami advisory for Miyagi Prefecture, advising that a tsunami wave of up to 0.5 meters (1.6 feet) may impact its coastline. No tsunami warning was issued, however, as no destructive waves are expected.

Japan was devastated by an enormous 9.0-magnitude earthquake earlier this month, killing thousands.
