Trang - Has Anyone Been There?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of going but can't find anyone that has been. It is one of the few places in the south where I haven't been.

If you've been to Trang, did you like it?

Are there any offshore islands that you suggest over any others?

Also, is the middle of October a safetime to take a longtail boat to offshore islands about 30 or 40 minutes away?

Thanks to anyone out there with info.

That's a great link, Bambi. I'm going to send it to my friend to convince her.

After spending time on google, I just discovered that Trang is a little bit more difficult to get to than the other southern destinations. It's a bit more expensive, because there's less choice; for example, the only air travel is with Thai Air, or a long overnight train.

Did you stay at this place on excite? Can you recommend a good place? I was also thinking of Koh Kradan.

Thanks for your help :o

love your new avatar :D

Hi Kat, I went to Koh Muk a couple of years ago and had a pretty good time. It's one of the medium-sized islands off the coast of Trang and possibly the most developed, although it's not hard to get away from it all. I stayed at the resort at the northern end that is nearest to Tham morakot, or the Emerald Cave - a long tunnel that you swim through to emerge in what can be described as a huge upturned cylinder with sheer cliffs all around and a little beach with an Emerald-coloured pool, when the sun shines through it. If the tides are right go early in the morning before the crowds get there - you can't get in or out at high tide BTW unless you have SCUBA gear. I think it's supposed to be a national marine park around here too so they may ask you for the big 200. I got there early enough that the guy wasn't out of bed yet, but if you have a Thai driving license you should get it waved.

The resort on that beach was ok but a bit expensive, can't remember the name sorry, could be Hat Farang, but further around to the west are more secluded ones. Hat Sai Yao is supposed to be the best beach which is also around to the west and has great snorkelling (coral reefs) nearby.

You can get to Koh Muk from the Khuan Tung Ngu Pier which lies just opposite the island on the mainland and about 50 baht from Trang by minivan. Boats are about the same money to the main pier on the island. Don't take this as gospel as it was about 2 or 3 years ago when I went and I had the bike then so drove straight to the pier. When you arrive at Koh Muk, it doesn't look that inviting, especially at low tide with the mud flats, but the beaches elsewhere on the island are lovely.

Check out this rudimentary map for an overview.

Hope you have a great time wherever you go.

Cheers

ps - Trang (city) isn't much to look at; spend your time on the islands. :o

Kat, Koh Lanta is ok to stay at - very close by.

Pak panang (spelling) is also a nice quiet sleepy beach side area - you can stay in a cottage in the national park for 500 baht a night (or less), right on the beach. I love it down there myself.

I haven't stayed on these islands but did a day long-tail boat tour from Koh Lanta. All the islands were beautiful and we will be going back to stay on them at some stage. Watch out for the weather though. We did this trip in April and the crossing was horrendous.

Koh Ngai, aka Koh Hai, is stunning - beautiful beaches, clear blue waters, excellent snorkelling and rugged hiking trails over the island. it's also very very quiet.

take a trip to the 80 m pitch black tunnel on Koh Muk, too.
