Three crocodiles escape from flooded Thai zoo

BANGKOK, March 28, 2011 (AFP) - Thai authorities were hunting on Monday for a runaway crocodile from a local zoo, one of three that escaped during heavy flooding in the country's south, a veterinary official said.

Two have already been caught -- one by officials and another by villagers -- after they escaped in Nakhon Si Thammarat province which has been hard hit by recent downpours, zoo veterinarian Nopparat Inthongkam said.

He said local authorities had teamed up to catch the last reptile and to keep watch at the zoo in Nakhon Si Thammarat town, inundated by more than a metre (three feet) of floodwater.

Serious floods in the region have killed four people and affected tens of thousands more, causing about $10 million of damage, officials said.

Emergency disaster zones have been declared in 34 districts across five provinces since heavy downpours began on Wednesday.

I wonder what sort of enclosure has fences low enough that crocs can escape? Certainly none of the zoos or the croc farm at Samut Prakarn I have seen... blink.gif

"It happens every year, whenever there's a flood. Their owners don't know how to keep them safety," Fisheries Department chief Charanthada Kannasut said, especially blaming illegal crocodile farms which have mushroomed in recent years.

October 23, 2006

Rivers swollen from monsoon rains have prompted central Thailand authorities to order the evacuation Sunday of 4,000 crocodiles kept in pens alongside the rivers to higher ground.

Workers at a flood-threatened crocodile farm in Uthai Thani province on Wednesday rushed to move hundreds of the reptiles to stop them from swimming away.

October 19, 2007

Police armed with assault rifles searched for 36 crocodiles that escaped from a farm in northeastern Thailand when their pens were flooded after heavy rains, an official said today.

Latest rumors: there are more crocos from illegal farms and some in the airport area.

Also some told that they ate already some farmers chicken.

I can't tell if that is true or complete BS, I just got told so.....

Nothing to worry about. I'm sure there's plenty of stray soi dogs for them to chow down on before they get brave enough to try human flesh. :bah: It's not really their cup of tea anyway.

For what its worth the front page of the other paper has a picture of 1 captured croc. They say that 11 escaped, 3 caught and 1 shot. 7 still at large and just for good measure casually mention that 2 bears have escaped as well.

mmm, not sure. I suppose the fear factor would depend upon the type of bear - I mean, I wouldn't feel threatened by a couple of koalas on the loose, or even a panda or two but.............
