Phrase Pairings To Assist In Tone Drills

Recommended Posts

Posted

Consider the following phrase pairs that help learners distinguish tones and hone their listening skills ( hopefully these will be appearing on a You Tube video in the near future - a non-commercial education video clip)

I'm hoping the forum participants, here, can add to the list. Criteria is the word/phrase pairs must multi-syllabic and be reasonably simple to translate and useful in tone distinction drills.

นาที, หน้าที่ (minute, duty)

สีเทา, สี่เท้า (color grey, four feet)

ข้างล่าง, ข้างหลัง (below, behind)

สั่งอะไร, สั่งอะไหล่ (order something, order spare parts)

หนังเสือ, นั่งเสื่อ (tiger skin, sit on a mat)

Thanks for any contributions!

off the top of my head....

ว่าไงพี่, ผีว่าง่าย (how are you {older sibling}, obedient ghost)

ได้ไหม, ไม่ได้ (can?, can't)

04 Tones Drills MILE NEW NOT WOOD NO.mp3post-43437-0-70984400-1301711468_thumb.jI must be missing something here.

You refer to 'learners, Learners who can presumably speak and understand written Thai-but have not yet mastered the Tones

I guess that the post-43437-0-81181300-1301711420_thumb.jU Tube part is the significant part

Is the plan to assist those who have a elementary grasp of the Tones (as detailed on my attachments) but you now wish to educate to a more advanced stage

Not multi-syllable, but the source of plenty of confusion in giving and receiving directions: ไกล, ใกล้ (far, near)

Seems you typed that off the top of your head, and the result is pretty impressive. I couldn't have produced that. However, I noticed some mistakes and checked the dictionary (my reading skills are better than my writing skills).

Does new wood burn?

That would be:

ไม้ ใหม่ ไหม้ ไหม

maai(/) mai(\) mai(^) mai(v)

wood new burn (question?)

But the more common tongue-twister is

ไม้ ใหม่ ไม่ ไหม้ ไหม

maai(/) mai(\) mai(^) mai(^) mai(v)

wood new not burn (question?)

Usually translated as: New wood does not burn, does it?

เสือ ชึ้อ เสื้อ

Added lost tone-mark.

ใคร ขาย ไข่ ไก่

Corrected the K in ใคร.
