Ministry Seeking Solutions to Pricing Problem

The Commerce Ministry affirms it is doing its best to regulate goods prices to be fair to both consumers and retailers as prices of basic goods have been climbing.

The ministry says it is trying to tackle the problem as well as prevent corruption among state officials.

Commerce Minister Pornthiva Nakasai has addressed Pheu Thai Bangkok MP Anudit Nakornthap's question during parliamentary session regarding the public's standard of living, particularly when cooking palm oil is being sold at 47 baht a liter, which Anudit considered to be very high.

The Palm Oil Policy Committee has increased palm oil production by another 40,000 tons in hope of bringing down the price. Pornthiva noted cooking palm oil price can come down thanks to more production.

She also affirmed that the Commerce Ministry is doing its best to regulate goods prices for the public's best interest.

She went on to say the interests of retailers and suppliers must be addressed in order to maintain a balance in prices.

Pornthiva stated that the Commerce Ministry will not tolerate any form of corruption among its officials.

There were widespread rumors that some officials benefited from the recent shortage of palm oil.

Nonetheless, she admitted that prices of basic goods have climbed considerably due to higher costs of raw materials which the ministry is trying to tackle.

Flood aid fund worth 1.5 bn THB to be proposed to Cabinet

BANGKOK (NNT) -- Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Satit Wonghnongtaey is planning to seek the Cabinet’s consideration on a 1.5-billion-THB relief fund for flood-affected residents of the South.

In his capacity as the director of the coordination center for assisting flood victims, Mr Satit said a meeting had been held to follow up on flood situation in 8 southern provinces of Thailand, namely Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Trang, Krabi, Chumphon, Phang Nga and Songkhla. The amount of rainfall in the region has been found to be on the decline while air masses are being closely monitored by the Meteorological Department.

Mr Satit elaborated that the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation had already coordinated with provincial authorities on the evacuation of local residents in 9 out of 17 areas at risk of mudslides. Military officials have also been dispatched to lend help to local administrative organizations, governors and district chiefs in alleviating hardships in their areas while relief materials are being distributed at haste.

As another helping hand, the Minister revealed that the coordination center would propose an aid fund worth 1.5 billion THB during the next Cabinet meeting on 4 April. If approved, the money will be compensated to 290,000 affected households at the rate of 5,000 THB each, possibly starting after the Songkran Festival. Community leaders, village heads and local administrative officials will also be assigned to survey damages on buildings and residences, rather than waiting for their dwellers to report the matter by themselves, in a bid to speed up the disbursement of the compensation.

Govt to attend JBC meeting next week, PM insists

By THE NATION

Though the documents of the Thailand-Cambodia Joint Boundary Commission might not be considered in Parliament on Tuesday, the government will join the JBC meeting with Cambodia in Indonesia next week as planned, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday.

"We are engaging with Cambodia to go ahead with the JBC meeting on Thursday and Friday," he said.

Parliament might not be able to convene on Tuesday as scheduled, since Speaker Chai Chidchob has informed the members that he had to wait for official notification from the Constitution Court, Abhisit said.

The JBC, which is charged with deliberating on the long-running dispute over the Thai-Cambodian land boundary, became a matter of controversy as the government submitted minutes of its previous meetings to Parliament for approval.

Parliament has taken the documents into its consideration since November but has been reluctant to endorse them because of political pressure from domestic and international conflicts.

Parliament set up an ad hoc committee to study the documents for months but failed to vote. Some lawmakers requested that the Constitution Court rule whether Parliament needed to consider the documents.

The court said it had no grounds to rule on the issue.

Abhisit said it might not be necessary for Parliament to consider the JBC's documents, as some legal experts said they did not fall under Article 190 of the Constitution.

'Elite figure influencing senator selection'

By PRAPASRI OSATHANON

THE NATION

Chart Thai Pattana leader Chumpol Silapa-archa yesterday said an unnamed figure had control over the seven members of the senator selection committee.

However, he would not reveal who the person was.

"Society should figure out who can be that influential," he said, adding that he would take responsibility for what he had said.

Repeating something he has said many times recently, Chumpol claimed elites dominate Thai politics.

The members of the senator selection committee are: Con-stitution Court president Chut Chonlavorn, Election Commis-sion chairman Apichart Sukhag-ganond, Chief Ombudsman Pra-mote Chotemongkol, National Anti-Corruption Commission chairman Panthep Klanarong-ran, State Audit Commission chairman Pisit Leelavachiropas, Supreme Court Judge Montri Sriiamsa-ard, and Supreme Administrative Court Judge Kasem Komsattham.

Pramote yesterday declined to comment on the issue, saying the committee had agreed that only Chut and EC secretary-general Suthiphon Thaveechaiygarn would give media interviews about the selections.

Chumpol's statement followed reports of irregularities in the senator selection process a few days ago.
