One student killed in Bangladesh protest

2011-04-03 23:42:30 GMT+7 (ICT)

DHAKA, BANGLADESH (BNO NEWS) -- A student was killed and several others injured on Sunday in Bangladesh during a protest against a recently adopted women's policy, Press Trust of India reported.

Police opened fire after clashing with hundreds of students carrying bamboo sticks and stones at an Islamic school in the south-western town of Jessore. Protesters marched through the city chanting slogans against the government's move to ensure equal property rights for women since they believe it is anti-Islamic.

A local journalist told Press Trust of India that one student, who was identified as Hossain Ahmed, died instantly when a bullet pierced through his back. Police denied this, saying the student was killed accidentally by the protesters as they were using firearms.

Protesters wanted to draw support for a nationwide strike on Monday.

The government said the policy doesn't contradict Islam and blamed the group for misleading people by misinterpreting the policy.

Under the new policy, every child would inherit the same in the Muslim majority country, which follows Sharia law in matters relating to inheritances.
