Deputy PM Suthep denied he would shine Thaksin's shoes

BANGKOK, 4 April 2011 (NNT) -- Deputy Prime Minister for Security Affairs, Suthep Thaugsuban, has denied ever saying that he will dress up to give a personal welcome to an exiled leader, Thaksin Shinawatra, and shine the shoes for him.

He further denied the claims that if Police Lieutenant Colonel Thaksin returns he would do such things. He said the press might have misinterpreted his remarks which were in the Southern dialect.

The Deputy Prime Minister added later that what he said was that he would wear formal attire to see Mr. Thaksin at Suwannabhumi Airport but only to be taking him to prison.

Lets worry about Thaksin if he ever makes it back here, until then I stand by what i say..and further add for an "educated" man he sure seems to be quite stupid, reminds me of past Indonesian leaders actually full of rhetoric and absolute baseless propaganda

This thread is based upon the presumption that Thaksin does in fact return :) Until then I would say that Jatuporn, Weng, Arisaman etc all still beat Suthep hands down on being dangerous and two-faced :) I am not a huge fan of Suthep by far. He is the old style of politician that Thailand can well do without but let's be fair compared to many others he's not as bad as you would think. The Dems must have one hawk in their midst to be taken seriously and Suthep fills that role nicely.

Suthep gave title deeds to 592 plots of land in Khao Sam Liam, Kamala and Nakkerd hills of Phuket province to 489 farmers. It was later found that members of 11 wealthy families in Phuket were among the recipients

Dep PM Denies Offering to Shine Thaksin's Shoes

A deputy prime minister says he has never pledged to give shoeshining for ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra if the latter returns.

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of national security Suthep Thaugsuban stated his discussion with Democrat Party members on his plan for fugitive former premier Thaksin Shinawatra if he returns was about turning him in to law-enforcement officers.

Suthep said the rumor that he would shine Thaksin's shoes as a welcoming treat when the latter disembarks from the plane should be from a misunderstanding over his talks in southern dialect with Democrat MPs that he would wear a full business suit to receive the latter at the airport.

He then stated the Election Commission's suggested scrapping of advance voting to solve poll frauds should not be the best way out since such offenses could occur on the election day anyway.

Suthep said advance voting should be still necessary for those who cannot cast their ballots on the election day.

He assured that the election will certainly take place and said he believed the House will be dissolved in early May

The deputy premier remarked he was not aware of the planned resignation of the election commissioner in charge of political party affairs, Sodsri Sattayatham, while the rumor on a military coup is groundless.

Suthep stated the army has no wish to meddle in politics as it wants the country to carry on under democratic rule.

"New Democrat MP Suthep Thaugsuban is the least honest politician, but his immediate boss Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva is the most trustworthy, according to Bangkok Poll. Among 1,136 residents of Greater Bangkok responding to the survey, 39.2 per cent consider Democrat secretary-general Suthep as the least straightforward, followed by Newin Chidchob, the de facto leader of the Bhum Jai Thai Party, at 24.2 per cent and Transport Minister Sophon Saram at 8.3 per cent.

The opinion poll on “Believe in Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva to solve the corruption problem" was conducted by Bangkok University Research Centre last week. The most sincere politician is Abhisit at 49.8 per cent, followed by Democrat chief adviser Chuan Leekpai at 30.3 per cent and Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij at 2.2 per cent.

The worst form of corruption is politicians abusing their policy for their own benefit at 40.8 per cent, followed by collusion at 16.4 per cent and double standards in policy and law enforcement at 13.0 per cent.

Despite Thailand’s hosting the 14th International Anti-Corruption Conference from today to Saturday, 72.3 per cent believe the corruption problem in this country won't change, while only 15.5 per cent think it will improve and 12.2 per cent fear it will increase."

:) I looked at your link ... I don't understand WHY you linked to a Wiki article about the province as I did not see any mention of the alleged misdeed (pun intended).

That scandal brought down the Democrat Chuan Leekpai government at the time. 97 was it? So far back I struggle to remember.

Nope ... possibly his first term but certainly not in 1997. I still don't understand the unrelated link! (tried looking it up but it only mentioned members of his cabinet .. Suthep was apparently involved in a scandal later (Leekpai's second term) over something in Surat.

It was never confirmed anywhere that Suthep had an actual hand in the deeds passing to the HiSo hands. It has been alleged repeatedly, but is there a conviction for this anywhere?

it was blown up as a way to bring down Chuan, as we know any excuse is used here to topple opponents, but was never proven in court as having anything to do with Suthep, but the old accusation is always brought up over and over again.

No doubt there was some pressure from Hi So hands to bow out and not drag them through the political mire.

I've searched a lot of accusation, but no convictions. Is this whole song and dance good, no of course not, is this surprising, no also.

And think Alpine, as stated above, lets steel from the hands of monks. Kettles calling Kettles black in a total black out

personally i think Suthep is the worst part of Abhisit's cabinet and I would admire him so much more if he didn't have him around - he is a major weakness and i can never find any Suthep supporters, anywhere, Abhisit should show some leadership but doubt he will.

Suthep has a lot of serious work in the Kingdom, but to deal with any personality.

Whence comes that his so sick obsession? is it something what he learned at the Faculty of Political Sciences, or is it his personal hate?

Whence the necessity for full mouth of Mr. Thaksin, so many stories about Mr.Thaksin?

He as a deputy in chief of the government so he should be first to have trust in institutions, system. To leave to the system and it's institutions, the judiciary, to deal with the future of Mr. Thaksin.

Is this a result of his personal assumption that he should not believe to the judiciary system , in the case of Mr. Thaksin return?

or is it just plain fear of possible come back of Mr. Thaksin?

He is very interesting with his obsession as no one else in Thailand talk in public about Mr. Thaksin any more.

Or is it customary tactics of a dictators?

Or just a manner of Goebbels, to make enemies of the Kingdom all around, so to establish necessity for fighting?

Ok Metisdead.

Here is"fair use".

First 2-3 sentences of the text and the link for any one who would like to read how nice are democrats(12 MP) plus Deputy of PM.

In 2009, Suthep was accused of violating the Constitution of Thailand by holding equity in a media firm that had received concessions from the government. Under the 1997 Constitution of Thailand, which Suthep had supported, Members of Parliament are banned from holding stakes in companies which have received government concessions. In July 2009, the Election Commission announced that it would seek a ruling by the Constitutional Court to disqualify Suthep and 12 other Democrat MPs for having allegedly violated the charter.
