The accident happened at around 3.50 a.m. local time in an expressway tunnel near Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu capital. The tunnel provides a link to Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture. The state-run Xinhua news agency cited witnesses as saying that the explosion happened when two tanker trucks slammed into each other, engulfing at least three vehicles including a cargo van. The tunnel itself was also badly damaged, and a large fire broke out at the scene. Xinhua said several bodies had been recovered from the scene as of 7 a.m. local time, but gave no specific number. It said rescuers fear others may still be trapped inside the tunnel. -- © BNO News All rights reserved 2011-04-08
