webfact Posted April 8, 2011 Share Posted April 8, 2011 Thaksin to Draft Econ Policies for Pheu Thai Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has spoken to the foreign media of his plans if the Pheu Thai Party emerges victorious in the upcoming election. Former PM Thaksin Shinawatra, who is on a self-imposed exile, spoke to the Wall Street Journal from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates that he will play a key role in determining the country's economic policies if the Pheu Thai Party, which he is sponsoring, gets to head the next government. Some of the policies he raised include corporate tax cut and amnesty for all politicians who have been banned from politics in the last four years since a military coup ousted him from power. Minor correction it was 1996 or 1997 when k. Thaksin promised to solve Bangkok's traffic problem in six months. He stepped down before. Thaksin run the country in a period of worldwide economical boom. Thaksinomics had it's own problems in the long run. These started to become visible in 2005/2006. With the global economical crisis from 2008 till (in a way) now, Thailand would not have escaped major problems. However, he warned that new elections might not be enough to resolve Thailand's political divide, while also voicing his concern that the polls might not go ahead. In an interview published in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, Thaksin said he intended to play a key role in guiding Thailand's economic policies if the Pheu Thai returned to power. Thaksin said his immediate focus would be on slashing corporate tax rates and pushing for an amnesty for everybody charged with politically linked offences since the 2006 military coup, which toppled him from power. "This conflict has been going on for five years and many people have suffered mentally and physically," the paper quoted Thaksin as telling its correspondent in Dubai. "We should start all over again to help the country prosper," Thaksin said. The deposed PM told the paper that he was reinvigorated by people's uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa and was also encouraged at the prospect of elections in his country. Premier Abhisit Vejjajiva has said he intends to dissolve Parliament in the first week of May, with elections likely in June. After months of silence, Thaksin has become more vocal of late, indicating he intends to be actively engaged in Thai politics. According to recent opinion polls, the ruling Democrat Party is locked in a neck-and-neck race with the Pheu Thai and analysts predict the election could produce a hung Parliament. The post-poll scenario will make the support of small parties critical for either of the two major parties to put together a coalition government. If the For Thais Party wins, it could potentially push through an amnesty law enabling Mr. Thaksin to return to Thailand. Its precampaign pitch to voters is that it is the party that will bring the former premier home. Even if he doesn't return, Mr. Thaksin's latest comments indicate he plans to exert a sizable influence from overseas. "Thailand's democracy is at a crossroads," The Wall Street Journal quoted Thaksin as saying. "What's happening in the Middle East and North Africa tells you that the whole world, the majority of people, are changing because of the influence of what they see outside of their own country and the impact of the Internet and social networks." A steady stream of visitors come to his villa here among the golf courses lining the outskirts of Dubai, which is among several countries where he maintains residences. He also regularly phones in to Red Shirt rallies in Thailand to offer protesters encouragement. "He is highly unpredictable, but in the past few months he has disappeared from view," says Pavin Chachavalpongun, a fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore.
