Death toll in Thai floods and mudslides reaches 61

BANGKOK, THAILAND (BNO NEWS) -- At least 61 people have died in Thailand's devastating floods and mudslides that began in late March in the country's southern region, officials said Friday in their latest report.

Thailand's Public Health Minister Jurin Laksanavisit announced the latest death toll and said that almost 81,000 people are suffering from flood-related illnesses, including colds, foot fungus, depression, post-traumatic stress, and thoughts of suicide.

As the Health Ministry continues to treat the injured and ill and monitor their condition, around 30,000 medical kits have been delivered to Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani alone. Health personnel have also been deployed to inform people on how to help protect themselves from diseases such as diarrhea, leptospirosis, dengue fever, conjunctivitis and malaria, the Bangkok Post reported.

Since late March, heavy storms have affected several southern provinces, including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Surat Thani, Trang, Chumphon, Songkhla, Krabi and Phangnga, causing the devastating floods and mudslides.

The largest number of fatalities have been registered in Nakhon Si Thammarat with 27, followed by Surat Thani with 12, Krabi, 10, Phatthalung, 6, Chumphon, 3, Trang, 2, and Phangnga with one.

Jurin, however, said water level in the affected southern region has continued to recede.

In addition, the State Railway of Thailand resumed train services between Bangkok and the southern provinces on Friday after they had been suspended due to submerged railroad tracks.
