I am sure there are many cases in which rich and powerful forces have an opponent and it seems like an assassination would provide an economical, efficient and humanitarian solution (as in less loss of life than alternatives employed). This would seem to be especially true when the opponent is a leader without a groomed, almost equally powerful successor. (Castro, Gaddafi, Thaksin......).

I am not taking a position either for or against Thaksin. But, he surely had rich and powerful opponents, he surely has been actively disruptive to those currently in power and I surmise he is very vulnerable (judging by pictures of him shopping in Paris a couple of years ago). And, admittedly without any in depth knowledge of Thai political figures, he doesn't have a groomed successor ready to fill his shoes with anything close to his power.

So, why hasn't he been assassinated?

I really don't get it!! I don't believe in Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny or James Bond. But, surely there are a few competent people who would be motivated by financial gain and willing to eliminate Thaksin. Yet, Thaksin seems to be able to bounce around from country to country while causing disruption to his opponents, who are certainly rich and powerful.

Again, I am not taking a position for or against Thaksin, I am just wondering why he is still around.

I must be missing something. Why hasn't Thaksin been assassinated?

If you love some one you don't shoot them, if you detest someone but have a degree of common sense, you don't create a martyr.

That is all.

Frankly, they need him {Thaksin} around. Why would they consider ridding themselves of the perfect counter-balance to their dog and pony show. Nothing up my sleeves....
