After I put the wife out instead of the Dog last night, she (My Wife) suggested that I should get some stronger glasses :o

I have looked back 3 months on the forum and there is no sign of a thread on the subject.

Can anyone recommend a good optician in CM ?

I know like dentists there are many Opticians in town, but I have always found your advice to be pretty reliable.

Thanx in advance

The place I use is about two doors upstream of the AIS offices on Thapae road, (Towards Nawarat Bridge.) They have supplied me and three of my children with specs and have always been highly reliable.

(They also have the best watch-menders in Chiang Mai there.)

If you are noticing a recent deterioration in your ability to see well, it's definitely worth having a specialist check you up. There might be a serious underlying cause that could be reversed, or at least treated. At our age, there are too many possible reasons for fading sight to detail here, but things like impending type 2 diabetes spring immediately to mind.

Good luck.

Hi Pauly,

Glad you started this topic. I also will be looking for a good optician when I get in town. My doc here says I should have a special exam that tests to see if any blood capillaries have been damaged by my high blood sugar. Very expensive for this exam in the states.

You may want to have this checked as well.

If anyone knows of an eye doc who does this please let us know.

Thanks

There's one about 50 yards moatside from UN Irish pub. State of Art eye-testing gear and knowlegable English-speaking optician. I've used them for years; plus while waiting for adjustments etc can slip next door to Sandy's for a beer or two!

The optician I have been using for the last several years was recommended to me by a Thai friend. He has a well equipped office with modern test gear and reasonable prices. He is located on Ratchawitee Road near Sompet market. About 100 meters west behind the old shell gas station. It's at the right corner of a small business complex. Will try to dig out the shop's name.

My wife just collected her new specs from there so I grabbed the bag for those details for you.

Several expats recommended this place to me a while back, the kit is absolutely state of the art, the optician is fluent in English, they are probably not the cheapest but they are very good. Due to an overactive baby daughter (!) I am now on my third pair of specs from this place and very happy with them.

They have an off-road car park behind the shop and as Fosa said Sandy's place is very handy to wait for the work to be completed!

Have a feeling we are talking about the same place. My street name spelling was Ratchawitee which is the same as Rajwithi.

As for seeker108 you are asking for an optomologist. There is a private clinic building inside the Suan Dork hospital grounds that has specialists. The optomologist recommended to me and considered the best in Chiangmai can be contacted below. He is a University medical ajarn. He also has a private clinic open at 5:30pm. Contact him by e-mail to see where to see him.

Thanks Tywais. I'll get on to him in the next day or so. I was thinking that it might require a specialist.

Thanks for imformation JuniorExPAT can you give me an idea of price for spec's and test, will be buying new as I have trouble with the ones I bought 6 years ago, maybe white stick cheaper  :o

Depends on the material, coatings (UV, scratch resistant, etc). From 500 - 1500 baht for the lenses and test. The frames can cost a bundle depending on your taste. But frames in the 500-1000 baht are available. If your current frames are still OK then the cost of the lenses is all.

That sounds about right by my experience. I know someone who got the whole lot done for B2000, I've not spent more than B3000 on my specs and my wife chose some brand name frame or other and the whole cost was B5000 (her first specs, I think we can let her off on that extravagance!).

Obviously your taste in frames and your lens prescription will dictate the cost to some extent, I know that they will put lenses into your old frames and it also seems that the anti-reflective and UV coats on the lenses come as standard but I suspect you could ask for them to be left off (not a good idea if you spend any time outdoors and/or driving).

realised this thread is about 2 years old now. This place still there? need to get some new glasses. problem is that whenever i get new lenses, they tell me the lens are multi coated etc etc. within 6 months, they get all scratched up and no longer usable. feels like i drive back drunk everynight cause everythings blur :o

cheap lenses are what they are giving me for about 1500THB. fed up of wearing "disposable" glasses and need someone to sell me some good lenses with my frames. this shop any good?

just got back from vision center. slightly pricey. but extensive check up of the eye. thing is that after the glasses was done within 30 minutes as promised, the left side seemed a little blur. checked it again and asked me if i want to increase it by another +0.5. i said ok, he had no problems changing the lens for the left eye. I would imagine the krung thai optical place in big-c that i frequent would have come with half a million excuses why they cant change the lens. that too after waiting for a week for the lens to arrive. this was done in an additional 30 minutes which i wisely spent on a cool chilled tiger beer at UN Irish :D.

:o Vision Center. thanks for the recommendation guys.

I second that suggestion. Very modern kit, very attentive, and pretty quick too. I've had three pairs of specs from them over the years and one pair for my wife for driving. Even though they do not dispense the spectacles (check and correct the fitting to your face) unless asked I have never felt the need to explore elsewhere.

There seems to be a lot of positive posts about this place....

I must have odd eyes as I always seem to get better results from places that use the old fashioned 'drop-in' test lenses, especially with respect to axis. I wonder why that is?

It's about time for me to update my eyes, so I'll give The Vision Center a try. But ######... there used to be two young women in an shop just inside Robinsons on the second floor that ALWAYS got my glasses correct on the first try. Then they moved 'somewhere' and I've never been able to find them again. They used the old method. I wanted to purchase the 'try' model but they wouldn't sell it to me. I thought that made a nifty frame. Certainly better than the Ray-Bans that I usually use. :o

Oopps! I forgot....

I think I have to use 'darn' instead. That's for people who don't believe in Gosh....
