Semper
I tried this with my Mighty X the other day. I was doing about 70-80 and ended up behind a 10-12 wheeler (or what you call them), shifted to 4th gear and floored it. All the 89 horses under the hood was more willing than able. It took about 400m until I passed him. Maybe this is why there are so many head on collisions in Thailand. Edited April 14, 2011 by Semper

notbritish
And in your home country with a car of the price of a base model civic, you could pass someone that was driving at 85kph on a 2 lane country street while a car was coming on the side at 100kph in just 3secs with a nice turbo engine.. juehoe
That is the reason why I also like to have a free view of 1 kilometre. I also prefer to wait for a save overtaking! Finally I am now happy chosen the 2 litre engine for my Mazda

jackjones
I am no expert but I am now driving a diesel engined truck as against the higher reving petrol engines I have had before and it is clear that the power delivery is a lot different in that the power is a lot lower down the rev range. It might be better to choose a nice clear overtaking opportunity and go through in lower revs in fifth and floor it, rather than dropping down a gear and letting it over rev outside of it's peak power area. Just a thought and if you do try it and survive, let us know how it went !! As an after thought, turbos are pretty cheap here in Thailand or as other guys have suggested you can get your present turbo ( if it actually has one ) re- chipped and hopefuly you won't get caught wanting again. Good luck.
Brissance
ํ You need a chip. This baby is an old one, but I was expecting a bit more from it. Maybe you've been in Thailand too long and become accustomed to Thai overtaking speeds. 1km/h faster so overtake for 10 minutes or so. An old truck like the Mighty needs a low gear to utilize the available torque rather than the brute force of a turbo to overtake . 80km/h is only 50mph so not fast really. We have a MIghty which is used on the farm. It's 17 years old now but is still going strong. To overtake at 50mph I'd crash down to 3rd to gain impetus. Good luck. The word you are looking for is 'torque'. Do the Mighty X's actually have a turbo? I just see most of them spew black filth. But seriously, what his turbo needs is a rebuild. Re-chipping the turbo does not make sense. The ECU can get another chip. When it comes to overtaking, the S6 does quite nicely Edited April 19, 2011 by EvilDrSomkid

ignis
Maybe this is why there are so many head on collisions in Thailand. No it is because oncoming people don't get out of the way... Here people overtake with the headlights on or keep flashing them to warn there in the oncoming traffic lane then it appears it is up to the other driver to get out of the way or have a head on collision

When I get to drive my sister in-laws, it's an old Nissan, I thought it was common knowledge that you plan your overtaking maneuver by what you know of the power of the machine you are driving and making an experienced judgment on the passing time, simple easy, whats the hurry anyway. e.g. When driving an old motor wait for the straight bits otherwise you will be in danger or just plain suicidal. dominique355
It's all about power and there is only one thing that is better than power: more power. Or as a British motor journalist put it once: Just enough power is not enough. Only more than enough is enough. PS: I just chipped my car (has a compressor) to 420 HP
Pinot
A little off topic here but I was passing overtaking a truck on a 2 lane highway the other day. Signaled and began to overtake when a Honda Accord flew by me doing about 140 or so. We were three abreast on a two lane highway. Unbelievable! Never saw him coming he was going so fast. What an idiot. let me guess, you were stuck behind a big truck, going 80kph. You decide you want to drive at 90kph so you put your flasher, still at 80kph and you almost blocked the fast lane who had people going 110kph+ Happens every second in thailand, i doubt the people changing lane have a clue that they are people driving fast in the fast lane. if you want to overtake, wait untill there is 0 cars coming or press the pedal down the bottom. But please do check your rearview mirror before pulling out More like, check your side windows to see if there's a car next to you. I have never seen a thai or farang in thailand ever move their neck. Just 2 days ago, i was on the fast lane on the bypass, going towards central from phuket town. I put my flasher to go to the slow lane so that i can enter homeworks in a little bit. Farang in Old pickup truck is right there going 5-8kph slower than me, i slowly start turning (3rd lane is full of people going really slow) he decides to accelerate, but i have to turn because homeworks is now very close. he decides to swirl in the 3rd slow lane to try and go in front of me and make me wait behind him(instead of going the fast lane or not pressing the accelerator to let me turn which takes 1sec).. so at the end trying to not let me pass, he ended up on the third left lane, stuck behind a turning car and a bunch of motorbikes.. while i went to park, i finally saw him get out of where he got himself stuck right when i found a parking spot.. Finally karma hit someone who wasn't considerate of others. Overtaking someone going faster than you by the wrong lane seems the new trend in phuket. 5 days ago a wannabe rich thai did the same thing to me. I am on a 2 way 1 lane road. I put my flasher to park on the other side (so i am turning 180 degrees). There is no traffic except the guy behind me who isnt driving fast. I turn, now a car is coming on the other way(slowly) so he decides. "Hmm. I dont want to move my car left on the side parking area to pass him, i would have to check for motorbikes by turning my head" So he decides to accelerate, and try to pass me by the oncoming traffic lane which i am already turned at a 90 degree angle in(also a car is coming slowly). BAM he is right up in my nose on the side parking of the oncoming traffic lane trying to pass by me. (yes i am serious), i stop. Realize <deleted>. and finish my turning and park myself thinking TIT and loling. I check my phone, close the car.. What do i see? The guy left his car in the oncoming traffic lane, got outside and is trying to see inside my car. when he fails he opens my door and looks at me like he would of beaten me up if i had been a small thai. (he was old and looked small with a southern mean face, hes owns a building company on bypass phuket) I get out and explain to him with baby talk that a flasher means turning, he looks dumbfounded.. i call my gf over and she tells him to get out and learn to break.. and he tells me i should calm down if i want to keep living in Phuket. Definately humiliated by us pointing out that its possible to break or release the accelerator when someone is turning. This thread would also come over SO much more clearly if people used real English (British or American will do); re-read their stuff to correct errors before pressing the button, and realised that nowhere in Thailand is there a "fast lane." The rule of the road here is to keep left. You only use lanes to the right for overtaking or to prepare to turn right, using 'mirror, signal, manoeuvre' in that order every time. This is NOT rocket science. But it WILL save your life, and the lives of your loves.

Or we could simply only use thai, german, french, spanish and let you rot by yourself not understand a single word uttered? Or you could accept that some people were not born in english speaking countries and still accommodate you after you've showed your chavy social status. There is a Fastlane, there is always a car going super slow in the left lane so anyone going at an average speed needs to stay non-stop in the right lane. Even when there's 3-4 lanes.
