News_Editor Posted April 21, 2011 Share Posted April 21, 2011 Australian detention centre set ablaze in riots 2011-04-21 08:36:43 GMT+7 (ICT) SYDNEY (BNO NEWS) -- Dozens of asylum-seekers set fire to their detention center in the Australian city of Sydney, authorities said Thursday. A Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) spokesman said about 100 detainees torched nine buildings inside the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre overnight. The disturbance within the Fowler complex included a medical centre, a kitchen, laundry and computer room. Emergency services were working throughout the morning to restore order. New South Wales Police assisted the detention services provider, Serco, to deal with the issues, while firefighters were trying to extinguish the fires. Earlier, The Australian reported the asylum-seekers pelted firefighters with roof tiles and other debris as they tried to battle blazes at the facility, which houses around 400 detainees. The chaos erupted on Wednesday afternoon after a protest led by 13 asylum seekers, who were allegedly upset at not getting visas to remain in Australia, escalated dramatically. Three or four detainees still remain on the roof and are refusing to come down. The DIAC's spokesman said a full police investigation would be conducted to identify the perpetrators. The government's workplace safety regulator, Comcare, has been investigating the conditions at Villawood as part of a wide-ranging investigation. Australia's detention centres have recently been plagued by violent riots, suicides and self-harm attempts. Last month, a violent riot erupted at Christmas Island's high security detention centre in the Indian Ocean following a mass breakout. The article described the man only as a German citizen but later in the article they mentioned the plot was busted because of a tip given to the German embassy in Pakistan. Some were transfered from Christmas Island after the fires and riots there. These people have now relinquished any rights to stay in Australia. They came ilegaly trying to queue jump and then commit criminal acts whilst here. Should be towed back out to sea and sunk if they tried to re enter Australian waters. That guy was a blackmailer, all what he wanted was money. I also think you will find that the deemed original inhabitants aren't jut 'one' people. Aborigines have different cultures and languages and history within themselves which makes it very difficult to ascertain just who are the original inhabitants and where did they come from. Being a criminal was once a way to get deported from your own country yes. But you didn't have to be a criminal to come. Are you thick or something. Migrants are welcome to come here, just not illegally, that is why they are illegal immigrants. If they go through the proper process and are accepted then they are welcome to come and live here. Same as any country. They illegally enter the country and are held in detention until it can be determined if they are genuine assylym seekers. If they are then they are assisted in moving into the community, if they aren't then they get sent back. If the foreigners come with their navy and airforce and win the fight then so be it. That's what happens in the world, always has been. If I didn't like it then I would go live somewhere else, legally of course.
