Toyota recalls over 300,000 vehicles to replace airbag sensor

2011-04-22 02:12:30 GMT+7 (ICT)

TORRANCE, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) -- Toyota on Thursday announced a voluntarily recall of over 300,000 RV4 and Highlander vehicles in order to replace an airbag sensor.

The automaker intends to conduct a safety recall for approximately 214,000 RAV4 vehicles, from the 2007 and 2008 models, as well as 94,000 Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles from 2008.

All the fore mentioned vehicles were sold in the North American market. Toyota will to replace the curtain shield airbag sensor assembly from the vehicles of the specified models.

The vehicles have two sensors in the airbag sensor assembly which are designed to detect vehicle roll angle. If one of these sensors malfunctions, the warning light will illuminate and the roll detection system will be suspended but the airbag remains available for side collisions.

In the event that the two sensors fail simultaneously, the seat belt pretensioner and the curtain shield airbag could be inadvertently activated. Vehicles sold in other markets are not equipped with this roll sensing curtain shield airbag system.

The owners of the affected vehicles will receive a notification letter advising them of the recall in May. Toyota dealers will replace the roll sensing sensor assembly with a new one at no cost to the customer.

No other Lexus or Toyota vehicles are involved in this recall. In February, Toyota recalled approximately 2.17 million vehicles to address accelerator pedals that could become entrapped in floor mats or jammed in carpeting.
