ALGIERS, ALGERIA (BNO NEWS) -- A member of the Algerian opposition was found dead on Saturday, five days after going missing, El Watan newspaper reported.

The body of 53-year-old Ahmed Kerroumi, a university teacher, activist, and member of the MDS opposition party, was found at the headquarters of the party in the town of Oran in northwestern Algeria.

The cause of death is still unknown. Police arrived at the scene, but didn't comment on the incident.

Opposition groups in Algeria began protesting one day after Egyptian president Hosny Mubarak was forced to step down after 30 years in power. In January, Algeria experienced several days of rioting over rising food prices, poverty and high unemployment.
