Hope he does return very soon. Then Thailand can finally resume its long march towards prosperity. If you rely on the biased Western media, as I did initially, you can come away with a negative impression of Thaksin's impact on Thailand. But for the past 6 months I have had a new Thai girlfriend, now my fiancee, a lawyer who has brought to my attention the many improvements and reforms that occurred in Thailand under Thaksin's rule. She has also pointed out that his alleged 'misappropriation' of public money is lies fabricated by his opponents. Thaksin is the way forward for this country. Hopefully when he returns, Thailand will complete its transformation from developing to developed nation.

Welcome to the forum, and congratulations on your engagement.

Some of us who were here, during the Thaksin years, remember things differently from your fiancee, when so many of the projects he started were seen to be failing due to corruption or incompetence. Happily the economic growth & social-developments did continue, after he resigned his government, so the "long march towards prosperity" was seen not to depend on just one man or one party. Thailand has come through the global economic crisis very well.

I've often discussed with my own in-laws, whether Thailand is still a developing or 3rd-world country, personally I think it had made vast strides over the past 25 years in which I've been coming here, and is now a "developed nation" compared to many Asian & most African countries.

But I would disagree with your view of how the western media have portrayed events here during the past several years, if anything they have been influenced to some degree by Thaksin's paid P.R.consultants, so that the bias has been if-anything the opposite way, to the one you claim. All simply in my own opinion. B)

Had you been living here when Thaksin was in charge, you would probably hold a different view.

:) I find it amazing that someone would switch from a comparative observation of Thailand to a single source observation of Thailand, but love does make one blind!

No worries of a Thaksin return then, as the large majority of voters will surely have lived in Thailand when he was previously in charge..........

DSI requests indictment against three more red-shirt leaders

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) Monday requested public prosecutors to indict three more key figures in the red shirt movement for terrorism in connection with last year's political unrest and riots.

DSI senior investigator Thawan Mangkang met with public prosecutors at the Attorney-General's Office to suggest that a court case be pursued against Suporn Atthawong, Payap Panket, and Chinnawat Haboonpad.

The DSI also sought withdrawal of the three men's bail on grounds that they violated conditions for their temporary release by attending the recent rallies by the red shirts early this month.

At first I was not sure of your persuasion, then I noted you said girlfriend. What you are being told sounds like another Thaksin mouthpiece talking. She undoubtedly is not a tax lawyer nor very knowledgeable in accounting or she could add up what funds have been frozen, forfeited, traced and identified by western banking systems, spent, spending etc and see the folly of her indoctrination/brainwashing of you.

The very fact that there is even talk of a Thaksin return would suggest that the the door may have been left slightly ajar.....and not firmly shut.

Would that not suggest an opportunity missed........by whom?

Or it could be a trick to throw him of balance and thus make a mistake, similar to the Red Leaders release and their over reaching on April 10.

Just as the influx of 'False Flag' newbies recently

are a trick to throw TVF members off balance.

Perception Management 102,

make friends, seem a regular Joe type, 'one of us', be forthcoming with personal history and details to build a personality, and then lead them astray to the sales pitch point, through the back door, as if they should naturally think like you do, since you are so much like them, in most other ways. Hammer in the talking points, but keep the faux personal details coming the 'one of us-ness' flowing. Create a herd mentality, the urge to join the crowd, be included, follow the prevailing winds. It's a sham and a scam, but hey, it's not personal it's only business.

Some members choose very appropriate member names. Dear member falangbaa seems to be one of them. Mind you he's already on his (at least) second Thai girlfriend, fiancee now, lawyer with strong opinions to boot as well. Well I assume falangbaa will be able to tell us all about those 'improvements under k. Thaksin's RULE'. Don't bother with the 'misappropriation of public money', I / we know all about those already ;)

Thaksin stays politically visible ahead of Thai elections

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra stays visible in politics with his involvement in Thai opposition Puea Thai Party's campaign that kicked off in Bangkok over the weekend, even though elections have yet to be called. Party supporters chanted "Thaksin thinks, Puea Thai acts" at Thammasart Rangsit University's Rangsit Campus outside Bangkok - where redshirts and party officials came together to launch their election campaign.

Mr Shinawatra spoke in a two-hour video address outlining all of Puea Thai's policies before the upcoming elections, and shattered any notion that Puea Thai may have cast off his influence. For his supporters, it was the highlight of the event. Former Commander-in-Chief and Puea Thai Party member General Chaiyasit Shinawatra said the party's policies were initiated by Thaksin and are practical. "When Thaksin was prime minister, he traveled to different regions and stayed with people so he knew their problems and found solutions to them," he said.

Red shirt leaders who are also part of Puea Thai see the upcoming elections as a major turning point in their fortunes

A PM who stayed with people? People like other PMs, major officials and the like? He knows their problems, he got the same: how to avoid paying tax amongst others ;)

Really............ you think of yourself as a moth JD?

When you learn the art of absorbing what you read........... you will note I don't always agree 100% with what I say.........for those that understand percentages.....that does not equate to "don't even agree with"............

But I am off topic....apologies for having to correct JD yet again......:)

Literary minded, aren't we? I had to look some up, here's the list as foar as I can tell. Read and learn, ye'all ;)

The Life of Gargantua and of Pantagruel (in French, La vie de Gargantua et de Pantagruel) is a connected series of five novels written in the 16th century by François Rabelais.

Alberich was a legendary sorcerer who originated in the mythology or epic sagas of the Frankish Merovingian Dynasty of the 5th to 8th century AD, and whose name means king of the elves

Kyger Litor from a role-playing game about the people of Uz on Glorantha

jätte - giant; a mythical human of very great size, Odin was one

Huldra - Lady of the Forest, Scandinavian folklore

I remain out of politics, not interested in it here or home BUT all respect and honour due to those who desrves it.

I am amazed at the people, including foreigners - failing to realize what S. Thaksin did for this country and its people; including foregn businesses.

We probably fail to realize what he did since for many of us he did nothing. Why would we credit the growth of our companies to a man that did nothing [but work against us]?

But please, humor us, tell us what he did that helped us.

Yes, you are absolutely correct with: Pls, humor us, tell us what he did that helped us.

Aromaz should correct its Archive about Thailand that is if he has an Archive about Thailand.

My Archive about Thailand shows it was a Mr. Chun Leekpai who took the country from the brink of disaster when Chavalit Yongchaiyudh had driven the country over the cliff into the ravine of financial disaster and threw in the towel. Mr. Motormouth Thaksin at that time was nowhere to be seen.

It was Chun Leekpai and his Thai Democratic Party – the oldest political party in Thailand, starting in the early thirties – who was asked to take on to lead the country out of its financial disaster and held the Thai people's nose to the grindstone saving money as fast as possible to give it back the IMF so as to get out from under the IMF dictates. Chun's austerity the Thai people didn't appreciate so at the election Thaksin with his bags of falls-goodies arrived on the scene and the Thais like always when shown red, blue and grey bills fall over themselves to grab them regardless of the consequences after the orgy. Then when Thai people had fallen for Thaksin bullshit and he was in the driver seat Thaksin took the money Chun had saved and with great fanfare in all the Thai dis-news Medias presented the money to the IMF with the foolish Thais telling themselves it was Thaksin's own money. And this Thai people Cinderella behavior is still prevailing today 2011. Don't believe it, take a look around Thailand and you will be blinded by RED, shirts that is. Next election it will be interesting to see if Thai people have awakened from their brain-dead slumber.

Spot on Swerver, that's my recollection also.

I think Thaksin's cousin was referring to the various road-shows he did in Issan... to show everyone what a "man of the people" he was.

Empty photo-ops of him living shoulder to shoulder with the downtrodden.

But he kept ruining the charade. As when he was staying at some rural moo-ban in Roi Et. In the evening, he had a typical rural splash shower, "See, I'm just like you folks."

When he emerged from the shower room, the PR photographers were all there to snap his photo of Thaksin being one with the farmers. All was going great in the PR arena of the road-show until an astute observer noticed that the towel he was using was an imported, designer-label creation by Fendi that was bought at The Emporium for 30,000 baht.

Yeah, a real man of the people he was. :bah:

Thaksin has form for pretending that he is paying for something when he isn't.

At one time he tried to buy Liverpool Football Club for the nation, until one day somebody asked him where the money was coming from.

Not his pocket and the sale collapsed.

To save some face he bought Man City instead. Unfortunately nobody or nothing was going to suck him dry, so Man City was dumped as well.

For how long is it? months? years? we have been putting up with the forum red apologists telling us that 'its not about Thaksin?' The whole speech is 'I, I, I'

Not even the smallest scintilla of doubt.

A summary? 'I am Father Christmas, and these are the goodies', but first (and please listen carefully) you must bring me back, or no presents.'

And on the other side of his mouth he will be telling Jatuporn to keep the boys ready for some action. Not that Jatuporn needs to be told, just encouraged.

SPOT ON !!! great post!!

For those that lived through the 1997 economic disaster and that has been in business . . . We know the miracles Thaksin did....

It is a fact of history; go look at the Asian economic disater after the financial colapse in 1997....

Only Thailand got out of it, in the last year of Thaksin - Thailand even repaid all debts to the World Bank; clearing out the help they got.

A large number of devellopment sin Thailand got underway during his reign....

Do you understand :

a ) Thaksin was standing 1 step behind Chavalit when he said 'We will not devalue the baht' on friday, and on monday Chavalit devalued the baht causing the Asian Tiger economimic crash. Thaksin was Deputy PM. and was one of the ONLY people who turned a profit from hedging his baht investments, before the devaluation....

Please read in the assumtions of how that happened with his position at the time. This also goes to the heart of the Sondhi/Thaksin bad blood. Sondhi was not let in on the deal and was ruined and knew Thaksin could have given him the same insider trading knowledge but didn't. Fearing Sondhi and the Lao Satellite deal would be too great a competition for Shinsat... Later Thaksin used banker friend leverage to drive final nails into Sondhi financially for many years.. and the seed of an intense desire for vendetta was planted.

b ) Thaksin did NOT like the "World Banks*" reporting restrictions. It prevented him from cooking the books and doing deals he wanted to do. So he SOLD the "World Banks*" or more correctly IMF International Monetary Fund debt to... TEMASEK, yes Singapore bought it,

as LONG TERM DEBT, with no oversight restrictions, lower interest, but because of the longer time MORE COST TO THAILAND.

c ) Thailand was an original signatory of the IMF was and STILL IS, a member and contributor yearly based on % of national revenues. As short term safety valve, in times of financial distress. This is why Thailand joined and used the IMF funds. Because it is like a global insurance pool for members if they ever needed.

So Thaksin sold everyone the fiction that the debt was paid off, when it only was shifted to a less observent local 'owner', so he was not under such strong scrutiny, and played the nationalist card to make it seem he was getting some great satan off of Thailands back. But in reality sold the debt to a commercial entity, rather than the international governmental safety valve insurance agency, that Thailand is a part of.

Masterfully played since some still believe this fiction even now.

Ignoring the fact that he was in the heart of the cockup that CAUSED the need for that loan. Chuan took those fair and typical IMF loan agreements, for a time, in an attempt to clean up the Thai banking world. Thaksin made nationalist points while dialing back all those reforms to an ailing system, while benefiting from a return to strength of the REGIONAL economy. And taking full credit for the tough love repairs of others, while blaming them for the pain needed to do those repairs.

Similarly to how Abhisit is being blamed for external factors to Thailand's economy beyond his control.

* "World Banks*" or more correctly IMF

a) So, regarding Thaksin/Sondhi, you advocate Macy should tell Saks? That's left of Castro and Kim Jong Il.

B) Supposition rarely rings authoritative and this is no exception. Did or did not Thailand weather the financial crisis better than other regional governments? Believing your own conjecture does not reality make.

c) So what really bothers you is not that the country benefitted, but that he may have. You can say that the country did not benefit, but who is one supposed to believe, the articulate crowing of isolated foreigners that should not be involved in Thai politics, or the legions of people to whom the country truly belongs?

I usually try myself to believe the most articulate reasoned argument - which doesnt always come from the village camp fire in Isan!!

OH and by the way - if you told an Indian in England he shouldnt meddle in British politics you would be called RACIST!! Many Farang pay taxes into the Thai system and as such are entitled to a view - Thaksins not rteturned yet to remove democracy completely!!

The difference is that there is a movement and political party trying to whitewash the crimes of one of them, and a lot of posters supporting that.

If Barnham or Newin were trying to become PM, there would be a lot of posts against that happening too.

Where is Thaksin trying to become PM?

Both Newin's and Banharn's parties have done similar things to varying degrees, being just a vehicle for those people to enrich themselves.

I don't believe Thaksin is any different, he's just flavour of the month because he's a bit more clever than Newin and Banharn and has public support due to his populist policies.

It shouldn't be surprising to see Thaksin return and be exonerated due to the circumstances under which he was removed and subsequently vilified, tried and convicted.

Obberkomand zero - keep up the shock therapy!! You may be able to read some facts when the current course of treatment finishes!!
