SIMEONOVGRAD, BULGARIA (BNO NEWS) -- Six young pedestrians were killed on late Saturday evening when they were struck by a drunk driver in southern Bulgaria, local media reported on Sunday.

The accident involving an Opel Vectra happened at around 11.50 p.m. local time at a street in the Bulgarian town of Simeonovgrad, located in Haskovo province, according to the Novinite news agency.

Novinite reported that 23-year-old Danail Georgiev, the driver of the car, was driving at a high rate of speed before he lost control, struck a street pole, overturned, and slammed into a group of pedestrians.

A total of six people, ages 17 to 19, were pronounced dead soon after the accident while two others were transported to a local hospital where they remain with serious injuries.

Georgiev was also taken to a hospital, where he remains in a critical condition with a skull fracture. Two passengers who were with him in the car were said to be in a stable condition, Novinite reported.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident, but officials told the Bulgarian news portal FOCUS that Georgiev was found to be drunk after the accident.
