KIRKUK, IRAQ (BNO NEWS) -- At least two people on Tuesday were killed and six more injured after bomb attacks targeting three houses in northern Iraq, the Aswat al-Iraq news agency reported.

The attack targeted three residences in Kirkuk city. Two of the houses are owned by police officers in Hawija district and the third belongs to a local council member in al-Riyadh district.

The three houses were severely damaged. Kirkuk Police chief Sarhad Qader said that preliminary reports indicate that the attack was perpetrated by al-Qaeda operatives as the methods used in the bombings were similar to the ones against security bodies in west Iraqi Anbar province.

Also on Tuesday, security forces managed to free three Turkish workers and an Iraqi citizen in southern Kirkuk. The men were abducted over two months ago by unknown gunmen.

Police Director Qader added that the release was a result of an operation of Kirkuk's 12th Army Division soldiers. The three Turkish workers were kidnapped from their residences on February 12.

On Monday, Kirkuk witnessed clashes between the Iraqi army and Kurdish security forces which resulted in the death of two soldiers and four more injured. An Iraqi Army patrol shot at a vehicle, killing the driver and prompting elements of the Kurdish Asayish to engage in a gun fight.

The oil-rich city of Kirkuk is located about 280 kilometers (174 miles) to the northeast of Baghdad. Kurds claim control of the city as it was originally a Kurdish city. Currently, the city is home to a mixture of Arabs, Armenians, Assyrians, Kurds, Shabaks, and Turkmens.
