TAIPEI, TAIWAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least 6 people died in the central region of Taiwan after a small train overturned, which also injured at least 60 others, officials said Wednesday.

The accident occurred in Taiwan's Alishan Mountain, where four of the small train's eight carriages overturned. The train was mostly carrying tourists from the Chinese mainland, China's state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

According to witnesses, three of the fatal victims fell over the Alishan Forest Railway line, which is located in Chiayi County, Taiwan, and is one of the most popular tourist sites in the island.

Search and rescue teams were deployed with helicopters, as the injured were airlifted to local hospitals from the mountain area. Between 20 to 30 people were reported seriously injured.

In 2003, 17 people were killed and 156 injured when a train derailed near Alishan Railway Station.
