ZHENGZHOU, CHINA (BNO NEWS) -- Eight people were killed and 17 others were injured in a blast in central China's Henan Province, a local official said Wednesday.

The state-run Xinhua news agency reported that an explosion on Tuesday evening ripped through the homes of coal mine workers and nearby villagers in the city of Pingdingshan's Shilong district. The blast severely damaged dozens of nearby homes and a kindergarten, injuring a child.

Eighteen people, including several miners and their families, lived in a residential area located about two kilometers (1.24 miles) from the coal mine. Eight of them were killed and the remaining ten were injured in the blast.

Zhang Wei, the district's deputy governor, said the explosion was caused by illegal explosives that were stored in the community. He added that 25 people, including the owner of the Tianshun Coal Mine, were arrested.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the explosion.
