April 28, 201115 yr Oh, make me feel like a bird. Not flying in the sky of freedom, but c-a-g-e-d. Barred windows suffocate me, I feel caged and make me feel depressed. How do you feel about being barred? Is it avoidable?
April 28, 201115 yr My house doiesn't have barred windows and I've not been burgled. All my friends think I'm crazy, I think they're paranoid. Having said that, someone's probably hopping out of the window with my laptop right now..... I need a new one anyway.

April 28, 201115 yr Honestly, I don't even notice them. They are common in many places where the climate allows for keeping one's windows open all the time. Besides here, I've seen them in Hawaii, California, Arizona... Some of them are quite decorative and pretty.

I understand how you feel about bars, I too do not have them. However, I have other things in place which I feel will deter any burglar. If you have nothing, it's not a matter of if, but when?
April 28, 201115 yr In the US, they are often called Barbeque grills. There, lenders and insurance companies require emergency release mechanisms on them if the bars are in a bedroom or area with limited egress.
April 28, 201115 yr In the US, they are often called Barbeque grills. There, lenders and insurance companies require emergency release mechanisms on them if the bars are in a bedroom or area with limited egress. I've seen grills here screwed to the wall from the outside. Not only could a smart operator remove them, but if you are trapped inside and need to get out it's bad news.
April 28, 201115 yr I took them off of my house 10 years ago when I first moved in..Never regretted it either.
April 28, 201115 yr Get a Dog. The thieves poisoned our dog and thinking she was dead tried to rob us 2 weeks later. She was not ,scared them off and they were caught a few days later. Others before us were not so lucky they lost their dogs and got robbed. We have bars. Not unattractive if you get the right ones.
April 28, 201115 yr Author Get a Dog. ... The thieves poisoned our dog and thinking she was dead tried to rob us 2 weeks later. ... Oh my Buddha.. unbelievable...
April 28, 201115 yr Removed them from my new condo a week ago, hate them too. What helps a bit is paint them white.
April 28, 201115 yr Top Tip, If the grills are on the outside of your windows, fill the screw heads with epoxy or some other filler, otherwise they're real easy to remove.
April 28, 201115 yr Live in a moobaan with decent security. I have no bars either. Missus wanted them but I said noway. But I think I would if in a village or town house. The terraced house I used to live at in close to town could see where previously been had a good go at.
April 28, 201115 yr Top Tip, If the grills are on the outside of your windows, fill the screw heads with epoxy or some other filler, otherwise they're real easy to remove. Or change all the screws to a tamper proof head, easy when one countries commonly used screw bits are unavailable in another (this) country.
