More than 3,000 residents, in prone areas at Krabi’s tourist beach of Ao Nang, took part in a tsunami evacuation exercise organized at the beach last week. The exercise simulated an earthquake at about 8 on the Richter scale and tsunami warning was issued. The authority then sounded the siren warning people and tourists on the shoreline to evacuate to the higher ground. There were four designated evacuation shelters at Ao Nang which were Klong Haeng School, Success Beach Resort, Outlet Mall and McDonalds restaurant. Being one of the damaged locations from the December 26th tsunami, Krabi’s evacuation exercise aimed at risk reduction and prevention of loss of lives and properties in case of a natural disaster and to restore confidence for residents and tourists along the shorelines.
